The answer to - what you can do about Urinary Tract Infections- is complicated and most family doctors over treat then with antibiotics partly because patients insist that.
Unlike the cerebrospinal fluid space around the brain but like the large intestine or colon the urinary tract is not a sterile channel. There are going to be some bacteria, fungi and viruses roaming around there and not need treatment. Even if there are some minor symptoms as is often the case with those who do self catheterization etc., some degree of infection is better tolerated and given time for it to spontaneously resolve. That builds immunity and gives better results in the long run. The same is not the recommendation of childhood ear infection. Only the more serious UTIs need to be and should be treated with antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics would help generate resistant bacteria to harbour the UTI and once that happens those buggers would go up to the kidneys and knock them out and then antibiotics wont work and also many of them harm the kidneys too. There is a need to shift the emphasis away from antibiotics and more resort to lifestyle changes like fluid intake, diet and activity etc. childhood ear infections and the common viral sore throat should also be similarly not prescribed antibiotics and public must stop demanding them from their doctors.

Sometimes, when I get symptoms for either a UTI or another stone, it can be hard for me to decide what to do. If I go to my GP, I end up paying a lot of money to be told to drink lots of water (which I already do for my Cystinuria). If I go to the ED when the pain gets unmanageable, it can be hit or miss as to what doctor I get and I can't stand the thought of feeling like I'm wasting peoples' time. And then there's that once a month regular time when I have to tell myself it's not stone pain, it's period pain so stop panicking!

Hi Dr. Malik, im 66 and have to tell you ive always preferred female physicians for everything. Wish id have gotten a female urologist here in Chicago. I find female Doctors listen better and can detect health problems much better than men. Our family pcp is female, over 20 years we've been with her i can tell you she saved my life one time i was hospitalized for a surgery i had, she and she alone picked up on something my surgeon did not see. She will call us to see how we're doing if she hasnt heard from us for awhile. Can you believe it? My wife and daughter love her like family, its the way it should be.
