ОтветитьBought my 99 986 for $8,100.00 in 2018. I replaced IMS bearing for peace of mind and for resale value. All in all I got Stuttgart craftsmanship for 10K. Cant beat it! Puts a smile on my face every time I drive her.
ОтветитьI have a 986S with a 3.4 transplant, and a 996 Carrera and I love them both. The issues with the m96 are real, but vastly overstated. Best part is I bought them both for less than I'd pay for just the 996 now. They're easy to work on, tons of fun to drive, very practical daily drivers, and people love them.
Haven't been this pleased with a car since my Datsun Z cars.
Get the 3.2 manual over this.
ОтветитьI bought a 986 Porsche 2.7 for £4000 with 60k miles on the clock three years ago.
It led me into buying a 996 gen2.
I traded in the Boxster to buy the 911 and it took a while to get over letting go of the Boxster.
Great cars.... Buy one before it's too late.
I don't know who says the engine is in the wrong place for a Porsche, but they certainly need to study a bit more on the history of Porsche, especially on their racing pedigree...
ОтветитьAlways buy the S. Got into a 2000 986 S, in June 2020 for £4500. 85 k miles with a good history.
ОтветитьThank you for increasing the value of my car
ОтветитьI know someone that paid GBP1000 for a 2.5 earlier this year. Prices for cars have gone mad lately.
ОтветитьCorrection: The name is a combination of "Boxer" and "Roadster" (not speedster as stated).
ОтветитьThe best car journalist in 2021
ОтветитьI bought the cheapest, crappiest 1998 2.5. It has a few dents and had a few faults too. I had no trouble fixing everything myself, it was fun to work on a qualifying car with zero rust. The car puts a huge smile on my face everytime I see it and drive it. Still has knackered AC, small dents and a few other things crapped out but I don't really care.
ОтветитьWell I have had my 2.7 986 for 11 years and love it, in fact it’s getting better with age.
ОтветитьI’m pretty sure boxster is a mix of boxer and roadster not speedster. I might be wrong though
ОтветитьGot my 98 boxster as my first car 2 years ago. It's a wonderful experience!
ОтветитьI bought one in 1999 and did 75,000 miles over the next 20 years. No problems...fabulous car.
ОтветитьS2000 was light years ahead during the same period.
ОтветитьI just can't get over that rear end. It's so ugly imo and ruins the car.
ОтветитьI NEED THIS CAR
ОтветитьThis I understand. The 944 not so much
ОтветитьWhy does he pronounce Porsche as if he is German?
ОтветитьOver hyped
ОтветитьM96 is junk. These cars are disposable. Don’t pay more than you are willing to lose
ОтветитьI’ve had a 2003 2.7L base Boxster for about five years now. I’m a motorcyclist but this Boxster had really put a damper on biking! I’ve had work to do on it, it’s 18 years old so no surprise. Parts are not terribly expensive if you know where to look and working on the car is actually pretty easy for a capable shade tree mechanic.
For the money I’m not sure how you could beat the road going pleasure for the dollar!
All these Bargain Boxster videos doing the rounds. As it's 2021 (well, 22 now) the Boxster is basically 25 years old.
I mean, yes it was a cool car that tried to push design 15 years ago but sadly the Digital and tech age beared down upon it and gave it the cold-shoulder. I think it's well worth spending on the 2014 specific model Boxsters. Quite a bit more; but a whole whole new World of fun.
My wife bought a facelift '03 'S' 10 years ago and I love it. Basalt black with cinnamon extended leather and alu pack, lictronic xenon headlights, 18" carrera style wheels, big reds and the largest 260PS engine. It's frankly amazing to drive. With the the pandemic and my dogs at the last stage of their livesnow, we haven't driven it in a while, but we're going to get some good driving holidays out in it when we can.
In a world of speed limiters, computer intervention, electric motors and all that jazz, this really feels like an old school driving experience and I'm not sure we'll ever sell it to be honest.
very controversial, but the body style of the 986 is one of my favorites
ОтветитьI have a 98 Boxster here in Canada on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Had it for about 5 years driving it in the summer mainly. She needs a little work here and there but in beautiful shape. I just can't let her go lol
ОтветитьThere is NO better sports car for the money, whichever budget you have. From a sub 10k 2.5 all the way to the mighty Spyder.
ОтветитьI owned one for 4 and half years from 2009. They are plagued with issues, especially suspension parts. Things WILL fail constantly, like the Windows regulators, CV boots, coffin joints. Unless you want to potter to the Bingo and back at the weekend you should avoid these like the plague. Money pits. They are cheap for a reason. The 987s are even worse.
ОтветитьMy 1999 986 has 21k and original tyres yes it's mint 💎
ОтветитьSome people like to look down on the Boxster because it's not a 911 but then lose their minds over an S2000. A 986 is basically a german equivalent, slightly less power but less weight too. The Boxster is a monster on a canyon road, the amount of speed you can carry through a corner and how early you can get back on the gas is hilarious. It's got amazing hydraulic steering, it's light, it can cruise comfortably at high speed with the top down (and have a conversation), it makes nice flat six sounds. It's very easy to work on too if you can turn a wrench.
If you are that worried about the IMS get an earlier car with a dual row, or replace it with a oil fed Pedro's garage unit for less than a grand.
I have been fortunate to own 9 Porsche over the years and still have 2, the 986S was one of the best, buy a good one now if you can.
ОтветитьBought my 986s 52 plate back in 2010 and still going strong 👍
ОтветитьWhich raceway is this?
ОтветитьThe Ultimate History of Porsche gives the HP as 204 not 201. Good to see you got the origin of the name correct though.
ОтветитьBuy them before prices skyrockets! Love my boxster
ОтветитьPeople, if you live in a Country where it costs less than 10K (€/£/$), and you earn 30K/year, without main compromises, just buy it, love it, enjoy... Why would you through similar money at anything else?! I am 48, living in Portugal. Here they cost 17K €+. And most of us ear less than 25K. Also have family, kids I need to drive to school. I wouldn't think twice if I could afford two cars, was single or my kids were already grown up.
ОтветитьI am shopping for a pre 2003 986 S - must have amber indicators and 17" wheels - original is always best IMHO
ОтветитьGreat review! I personally purchased my white 2004 986 three years ago, and settled on a price tag of $13K. Here in Alaska, these are very hard to find, but buying from the original owner, having 12,000 original miles, and having no modifications, I couldn't pass up the deal. Inspection from my local dealer came back flawless, and I even got offers from customers touring through the shop to buy upwards of $22K. Even for the money, I just couldn't justify letting it go.
The fact Porsche has spun attention back to the early models is extremely refreshing, including the PCCM Plus option to include Android Auto/Apple Carplay. It's great to see that you can still own a Porsche classic, and give it a modern feel.
Sure, it's not the 996, it's an H6 with ~217HP, it's viewed by the upper community as "the poor man's Porsche", but it handles beautifully, looks attractive, and sounds great.
Never disappointed.
This is the most beautiful sports car ever made
ОтветитьThe gearshift is from the 993, and the steering wheel and the seats. It is incredible how cheap these cars are.
ОтветитьAfter having had 3 x 911 and deciding I wasnt using them enough, I bought a 3.2s, to drive, they are great and no less enjoyable from a 911
ОтветитьI have been offered a 2.5 R plate car in red with 68k on the clock for 5K and after watching this I think it’s a no brainer.
ОтветитьWizard is fooling us more by saying that is a boxster S. It's actually a 2.7 gen 2 base 986. Boxster S has red calipers, white guage cluster dials, 6 speed manual and twin pipe exhaust.
Ответить2 months ago I bought a 2003 Boxster S (3.2l, 260bhp) thats got a great spec, has only done 60k miles, with a hard-top for £8,300. Having already owned a Mercedes SLK 3.5, and having driven a couple of Audi TT 3.2 Quattros, I can honestly say its by far the purest and most connected drive i've experienced. The balance of the mid-mounted engine and the confidence with which it holds the road is insane. I also looked at the BMW Z4 35i, which would have cost 50% more at around £12k and been guaranteed to depreciate. The value these cars represent is incredible, plus you get to own a Porsche.
ОтветитьNo Japanese car?
ОтветитьI can say that the main thing that got me to look at the Boxster was the ballooning price of Japanese rear-drive cars, it used to be you got an MR2 because it was as fast as a Boxster for less money, but now you can find Boxsters for about the same money with a far neater carfax, add to that factory rust protection, missing in most Japanese cars of that vintage, and you've got a winner.
ОтветитьI drove a 986 for 20 years and now have a 987 CS and 718 BGTS and it’s true they’re all awesome Porsches
ОтветитьA 2002 boxster, the number of defective parts is over whelming, at 55,000 miles it is towed as often as it is driven.
Ответить
