I started on Premier so when I cut, my feature that’s what I used. During that huge project it basically started corrupting my clips, inside Premier only, but it left sections and sequences screwed. I had to do a long work around to fix it but it was an utter disaster, completely terrifying. So I jumped ship to resolve which I had been using for colour and VFX.

Seeing as I was doing everything myself Resolve made sense and it really came through. Finished the whole project, loads of VFX etc. However I really didn’t like the way it organised the media and the UI whilst fine felt constricted. The biggest issue was working with sound. I use a pro post house and each time there were EDL and XML sync issues. I actually had to buy third party software for Premier and do this weird loop with the audio only to get the sync working with the PTools set up. Got there in the end and got the stems back into Resolve fine. Not sure what would have happened otherwise. Was very stressful.

For those reasons I’m now learning Avid. I can’t go through that again willingly. A bit of pain now but maybe some gains now in learning Avid will I think mean a lot smoother integration later especially as I’m farming more stuff out now. When you’re doing log form and have so much invested and the projects are so complex I can’t be risking that mess and headache.

I use Avid on a daily basis, but appreciate what the other editors have to offer. Avid handles long-form really well, but like you said, it's not a compositing tool. Premiere is frustrating from the standpoint of their buggy releases. DR has some really interesting features and you can't beat it's color grading. Great summation!

We can at least all agree final cut is the worst. The audio-video linking is awful.

I think one thing to consider and why AVID is so popular is enterprise/group work on a project. AVID was built from the ground up to work well with multiple users in the project at the same time and often it will be on a Nexis system allowing multiple users to edit within the project simultaneously. I know Premiere and maybe DaVinci have started to implement more functionality in that regard but from what I can tell Avid is still the best at this. This also made AVID remote friendly years before remote work became the norm. While it’s definitely not the one stop shop of Premiere or DaVinci it’s still the best at handling multiple users in a project simultaneously.

I use premiere, avid and davinci. The More advance you on davinci, the more you realize Davinci is the beast…the world just waiting, davinci updates are insane. One thing i hate about davinci is Fusion, its a mystery. Lack of documentation 😂

YOU CAN ADD AUDIO FX to an entire lane in Final Cut. But its a bit of work --> you have to make a compound clip of everything and expand audio components of that compound clip and then you can add effects to an entire "ROLE" (you have to set audio roles)

Loved your video! I use all but Avid currently. I used Avid in the past and agree with almost all you conclusions. However, PP is in a need of a rewrite. The code has become bloated and buggy and the program is just prone to crash. At this moment in time, I believe FCPX to be the fastest, most stable, easiest to learn editor that can run circles around all the other programs if you add a few key plugins like mBehavior, and AddMotion. Resolve does have some advanced features that are amazing like Magic Masks and Color but Fusion is a turd. Also, it's super easy to turn FCPX Audio in to track based. You simply take all the clips you want on their same track and assign them the same "Audio Roll" then make a compound clip out of them. Now they are all on the one track and you can effect them together all at the same time. Once you have all your tracks like this you can then put them all in on compound clip and master the entire audio track at once. This technique is also super helpful because it forces you mix in the proper order from track to master in a way that allows for proper gain staging and limiting. Just my thoughts. Cheers!

I still prefer Davinci Resolve. I like the tabs and it's easy for me to navigate anything that I want to do. Davinci actually is a great editing software even a lot of production companies out there including Hollywood using Davinci Resolve as their editing software.

As a audio engineer that got into film editing I Primarily use Avid Media Composer then Final Cut Pro as Secondary. Why? Avid is Amazing with Project Organization and Audio, Avid is the Only NLE software you can directly Punch in Audio, and now you can Directly Export audio from Media Composer to Pro Tools which I really like. I use Final Cut Pro as Secondary because I’m a Mac User, It’s a one time $300 purchase and I love the built in sound Effects, Titles, and Effects.

You need to select just one video track at a time to colour grade in avid you had 3 selected at once, Avid doesn't like that

I recently switched to DaVinci Great program. Even the free version is much better than many others. And Davinci is different from Final Cut Pro. DaVinci has Fusion, which is animation. And a special program for color correction is great. Adobe Luminar is a toy:) It's kind of like Power Director Color from Cyberlik. Now more and more people who are engaged in editing, go to DaVinci. Very easy to use and not so much slows down on Windows, like all the rest.
Have a nice day.

We are just missing Vegas Pro (and Kdenlive) here. I never tried Avid because UI seems kinda old, Final Cut Pro cuz I don't have Macbook. I tried Premiere Pro (left because of instability), Kdenlive (left because of some missing features but still sometimes use it) and then tried DaVinci Resolve because it is cross platform. Only thing I do hate about DaVinci Resolve is UI which doesn't really play well on Windows and Linux and I hate free codecs support on Linux too

Premiere Pro is also used in North America at a ton of animation studios. I've also used it for live action. I hate AVID with a passion. I have more than ten years on both and Avid has advantages. But why no one has taken the best features from all of them and made the ultimate one, I have no idea.

Just found this today, but yes you can edit clips in the Fairlight panel, really strange you couldn't figure this out. If you needed access to the media pool you just have to click it to open it up. And you can definately just drag clips as needed. Odd. Personally I find fairlight extremely powerful. And you can also just change the track from stereo to mono if needed.

The problem with Adobe is that its so slow and resource intensive. The same project in an adobe software is always more resource intensive then almost 95% of every other software they compete with. Its great for beginners and those on budgets but not for long term use.

i have been using avid for so long even i dont remember. tried shifting to others because they were cheap but ended up returning to avid every single times. had used fcp7, premiere, vegas, resolve extensively and fcpx on a couple of projects. but avid is defacto for editing long from . imagine 2000 hrs footage for a documentray series, others softwares took days to even open project and almost always refuse to open, even if they open, editing is never smooth. one movie spanned in 10-20 different premiere project proved workable for me. may be it has improved with new multi-multi core processors and big power hungry GPUs, but i will use that very system to transcode to DNxHD36 , edit on my 2012 mac book, generate an AAF and would finish on that very big computer. Feature films are buttery smooth on avid. but i never finish/grade on avid media composer. earlier i had an avidDS box for finishing which had smoothest possible workflow with media composer, then switched to avid+smoke(or flame), and now these days , an avid with RESOLVE/BASELIGHT. avid is for creative editing and is at least 1000 times better than any competitor for that. yeah it sucks at titling, simple effects, quick turnaround short form or anything which does not fall into film workflows for example reels, multimedia presentations or anything. but it does brilliantly what is it made for, creative editing. peroid. so always good to have a sidekick with avid, be it resolve which is best now, or somthing like nuke studio, baselight or even a premiere+afterfx combo.

I am starting a new job at a tv station and they are using Avid which gives me PTSD. I first had it at an ABC station and all the computers were crap and it constantly did what you had it do in color mode, and the computers would lock up until it finished exporting so I was using 4 computers at once. Once a year I try very hard to get Avid to work, but it always ends up breaking on me with windows magically flying around then I change a workspace, new ones poping up anytime I load in, and the video preview windows stretching horizontally. And the constant breaks like what you had in color mode. I start this job on tuesday and I'll have less than a week to be Avid Certified.

I have technically been avid certified since 2016 and the ABC station, but I have never, ever gotten Avid to work. Im beyond upset with the program, and I think Avid might be the reason I end up let go. If anyone could explain how or why Avid would be breaking so much for so many years on different systems, tell me. Every other NLE is gravy.
