How can you tell this ''they're hiding free energy methods'' narrative is bs? Simple: No process to gather energy will be free, it simply is not, you still have to spend huge amounts of money into designing, materials, assembly, testing, servicing, industrializing and so on. If you take out this cost, then any form of energy gathering that needs no combustible or fuel is ''free'', namely; solar, wind, geothermal, hidric.

If you want to extract zero-point energy (yes this indeed exists, Heisenberg's uncertainty principle can be used to demonstrate theoretically that the vacuum has energy density) you still have to design and build the machine that would do the job and that is cost, nothing is free. Also I imagine this would be extremely difficult if not impossible because it would violate the second law of thermodynamics.
