not interested in learning sculpting in 3d (would love to actually if humans lived 250 healthy years average) but the one month challenge on anything is such a great concept and love seeing people improve at anything in such a "short" period of time.
i forced myself to learn a new language and every day progress is disappointing to say the least but after almost 2 years I can joke and talk business and many other things outside my expertise field. Happy I did put the work and happy and motivated to get on new challenges.
isn't this like a hidden trick for happiness or at least fulfillment?

wow 100 attempts and they still look nearly as bad. I'm not even going to try to attempt this, you spent hours every day "improving" really just learning how to do slightly different parts of the face

Your progress from start to finish is phenomenal! Especially the anatomy of the eyes and nose. Talk about perseverance! Im so inspired to get back into sculpting!

My only critique that kept popping up in the sculpts is the eye socket on an average adult head. Its vertically the half way point between bottom of the chin and top of the skull. The hair and hairline can really throw us off sometimes but always try to keep that as a baseline.

I want to add that your presentation and video skill are top notch! Definite subscribe from me!

I feel much more comfortable modeling lowpoly stuff (Sculpting and realism sounds so scary). I know your video isnt about modeling but it made me question my learning methods (even tho I dont know how you did this day after day for a month) and I should find a helpfull book that clears all my doubts. I would like to know if you have some advice for modeling and also i would like to thank you for the video showing all your process even when you felt defeated, we all can relate.

I feel like you, like many other artists (myself included) really struggle to let go of anime influence. Anime faces simply doesn't look very good in 3D, reason being anime was never meant to be 3D, and there's very little sense of weight and mass to anime faces, from conception. I think you shoot yourself in the foot by referencing anime as heavily as you do in this process, and especially the way you spoke about anime like it's more realistic than your initial bust studies really proves how deep this bias goes.

Another things i'd like to point out is:
1) you're too stuck on things looking acceptable during your practice - this one is probably the culprit of many of the next things i'm about to say.
2) you accept cartoonized realism as a success when realism was your intent - this means you start your practice with one thing (realism) in mind and when realism isn't cutting it, you then shift the goal post to realistic cartoons, just to be able to say it's acceptable, preventing the frustration and failure that you should feel (and that is good to feel) when something doesn't go as well as you hoped for.
3) you don't test your memory for realism - those recall bust exercises created within you an amazing sense of relative structure for the face, but doing that for example for realism is really important to get a sense of relative proportions and other nuances, that you really lacked for a long time, especially in female faces, where you repeatedly created huge, bony jaws and foreheads, and you didn't allow yourself to erase the structure by placing fat where the reference clearly is asking for you to do.
4) you run away from the hard faces - those faces that make you frustrated, like jinx and monica, those faces are the ones that will reveal to you the biggest things when you stop running away. more often than not if you just put the face in the same angle and put one thing on top of another you'd see you were portruding the forehead too heavily, making the face too fat, too round, eyes too big (goes back to the 2nd point), but you just accept easy successes when the cartoonized version looks somewhat realistic, and that means you're not learning the realism lessons you should be learning.

One thing that is great with realism practices, is that finding multiple pictures of the same ator, you can be sure their skull is the same, so you can very easily test your model in different positions. this is yet another reason why i think practicing from those cases teaches you a lot. especially if you then practice the same artist at a different age or fat percentage.

PS: I'm telling you all this unsolicited advise, but I don't want to retract from how cool this initiative was, and especially i was really impressed with your chibification and cartoon analysis exercises. cheers!

the kind of thoughtful, thorough, and inspirational video that only a SONE could create <333 but i would have loved this even if it didn't feature my beautiful wife taeyeon lmao, as a beginning sculptor i can't tell you how helpful it was to have such a detailed breakdown of your process!! not only did you show what you learned, you showed HOW you learned it, and that's not easy to capture as well as you have. thank you so much for this resource!!

I think that your 100 sculpts journey helped you understand shapes & anatomy more but your understanding of gesture & rhythm might be what's still missing... And the reason why jinx was hard. I'm inspired to try making her myself now. Haha

this is why all artist are hugely scared of anatomy- the face itself has so many muscle and then when it becomes whole human body were screwec into years of learning different pose muscle etc.
