Why Does EVERYONE HATE Summoner?!?!? | Terraria 1.4.4 #gaming #terraria

Summoner is my favorite class and it has improved a lot since its creation, but my problem with the class lies more on the experience itself rather than its performance. For instance, I really struggle with the lack of variety of minions that are available, despite the improvement in the recent updates of Terraria.
When you look at the other classes, you find many weapon types that you can use (rangers have shotguns, bows, machine guns, different types of ammo, magic weapons are the most diverse in my opinion), so when you are at a certain stage of the game, you can choose which weapons fits you best and works better at the scenario you're in. For summoners, that doesn't feel like the case because not only they have fewer options, but also for most part of the game you'll using one minion, until you find another summoner weapon that is objectively better than the one you have now. More often than not, you won't be choosing one or two different weapons of the same tier, so the class progression feels really linear (I don't know if you are at least supposed to be able to choose the minion of your preference at certains parts, but if that's the case, then there needs to better balancing because some weapons fall really short when compared to the others).
And that goes into my other issue, it's not even necessary have to make a lot of weapons to improve the variety of the class, you could just use a mixed set of minions, so you can combine their strenghts or attributes in a way that you feel fit. However the game only encourages you to do that when minions are affected by I-frames (which feels absurd to me, why a class is based on adding multiple minions if those can't attack simultaneously?), when i tested for other scenarios, my performance when mixing minions was lower. (I don't know if this is an AI issue, or if some minions just really are way better than others). That feels like a wasted potential, if you can summon 7 different beings, why summoning a identical set would be the best option in most of the scenarios?
Also, some minions aim really bad, the grinding sometimes is really painful, and some of the class features are still attached to other classes: why we still don't have modifiers for summoning weapons and why whips depend on melee accessories to be buffed?

why didn't you use nights edge for pre hardmode? It's undoubtedly the best weapon for melee pre hardmode

As a summoner main, I prefer using a summoner meelee hybrid.

The DPS tests makes no sense. Post-Skeletron Summoner easily deals over 400 DPS single target, by the way full Imp Staff is very suboptimal for DPS. and in Hardmode, Spider Armor + Blade Staff + Cool Whip doing only 300 DPS is completely wrong and impossible, the actual DPS with Cool Whip is well over 500 and I'm low balling it. Based on the footage you've shown, the target dummy you used doesn't even get affected by whip tags, which makes up half if not most of Blade Staff's damage output, so the tests are fundamentally invalid based on that alone.

As for Defense, the difference in survivability when comparing Summoner armor to Ranger armor is practically negligible. Defense is exponential in effectiveness the more you stack it, and it's not until Melee armor (especially with Warding) that it actually starts to make a big difference to your survivability. Furthermore, you can use items like Worm Scarf, Brain of Confusion, Charm of Myths, Frozen Shield and Cross Necklace to ensure your survivability.

As a melee who really wants to be summoner but when i put summoner gear my mind just says GO BACK I WANT TO USE ZENITH then when i change back to melee my mind says NO PLAY SUMMONER SO YOU CAN USE ALOT OF TERRAPRISMAS

The thing with summoner is it requires a lot more skill and game knowledge than all the other classes. You have to know how minions and i-frames work, as well as things like which minions pair best with which whips, whip stacking, minion mixing, and of course using the proper armour and accessories to maximize your damage. It has the potential to deal some absolutely insane damage, but it requires a lot of effort, and people often don’t put in that effort and then think it’s bad because they’re using a sub-optimal loadout, especially because with other classes you can use a sub-optimal loadout and still be able to get by just fine. It has a very high skill ceiling, especially when you take into account things like hybrid builds and whatnot

I mean i dont really hate it, i just hate the playstyle. I hate having to use whips, and if you really wanna max dps, you need to whip stack, which sucks even more. Its a subjective thing, some people like using whips, me personally i hate them lol. I really like the minions and concept of the class, i just hate the main weapon design of the class.

This really doesnt feel like summoner is being treated right in this video. Notably the post plantera stage of summoner, i can reach 4000 - 6000 dps with most minions around that time frame, and, while i cant whip stack, even whipstacking with two or three whips could easily top any other class in dps. Additionally, summoner gets all melee speed buffs from things like ale / sake, and feral claws, allowing whips to do insane damage. Tag damage is also a insanely strong buff to summons and allows them to shred through enemies.

For me and my friends everytime we have a summoner we just put em on crowd control cause they pretty good at it

Having about 1.4k hours in Terraria at this point, I believe I can say that summoner sucked in 1.3, except for the last two summons, which were pretty overpowered. They're still broken to this day and the entire rest of the class has improved an incredible amount up to the present. When played right, summoner can reach insane damage levels that will shred bosses before they get to make your defense a relevant stat. Whips, the buffs they grant, new minions, it all contributes to summoner actually having the potential to be quite fun, however there is one glaring issue: The way minions behave. Some of them just have terrible enemy tracking capability, can't reach flying bosses or don't hit what you're telling them to hit with a whip/the right click from the staff. It ruins the experience for me.

You used the blade staff on a target dummy which doesn't have any defense, which means you didn't get the advantage of armor piercing of blade straff. ignoring armour is important when you weapon's attack rate is good because each hit will do additional damage because of that

if armor pirecing is 10 it will do 5 extra damage on every hit, which is not useful if your weapon is high damage low attack rate like sniper rifle but blade staff is low damage high attack rate

People who say summoner bad are people who doesn’t use it right if use whip stacking and minions mixing(in pre-hardmode) whip stacking can easily make summoner deal much more damage and mixing minion in pre-hardmode is pretty much something every summoner should do because all pre-hardmode and some hardmode minion have I-frame that block other minion and sometimes even other weapon attack this result in a lot lower damage output

Use 3 whips and see the difference, summoner is the class where u need more skill, if you just want to kill things, ok, simply shoot them to death, but summoner with whip stacking correctly can deal a lot more dps than other classes

my only issue with summoner is theres not enough options for weapons at many stages of the game and if their are theyre either rng drops or very out of the way to get. i think there should just be more variety in the class but other than that its great

I think they should buff Summoner's defense since you need to get rather close by using whips. Summoner really shouldn't be the most glass of the classes.

To be honest summoner is the best class in all of terraria, but it lacks weapon progression.

The biggest problem of summoner is that u can be in two whip attacks away from boss and u have not much variety; yep sanguine staff is different AND u can get it in the earliest hardmode but that is very tedious

Your tests are VERY away from the truth, because your setups are stipid:
Why you use sunfury instead of nights edge?
Why you use star cannon instead of phoenix blaster or hellwing bow? (they have not broken dps)
Why you use demon scythe instead of waterbolt (with walls) or flamelash?
AND THE MOST QUESTIONABLE SETUP. Why you ever need to use obsidian armor that rely on whip damage like a competitive setup??? Summoner has bee armor and summoner dps is very different from other classes because summoner dps depends on amount of minions you have, thats why you need to show accessories. Whips do a lot of damage just use them right and be not far away from boss

And last Blade staff is trash, use spider staff with walls or sanguine staff

Summon damage goes through the roof if you whip stack.

Also, using only imps is a bad idea because they interfere with each other's i-frames, you're better off using multiple different static I frame minions. Also, against a target with no defense, the blade staff is basically useless so the sanguine staff would be better to test.

I also thing orichalcum armor would be the better armor set to use to test mage
