Why are Bowling Animations so Weird?

Someday I will have my own bowling alley in the basement of my house, and as a 3D artist, my own bizarre animations will play on the screen with every move.

it's literally because of that meme: when animators get told "it's just bowling animation, don't overdo it" they get insulted and give you a surreal masterpiece, in spite of the ridiculously tight constraints they're working under. but you can still sense their exasperation over being such underappreciated and underfunded virtuoso's all throughout their work.

Lol I’ve always noticed it but never think of it twice, this is some high level attention to detail.

I worked in the offices of AMF after they became Qubica AMF for about a year. I can tell you that the reason these animations are so weird is because they were made by so-and-so's cousin who knew a thing or two about 3D animation 20 years ago, and the people designing the bowling equipment are not artists, they're engineers and they see updating these animations as being extremely low priority.

This is an amazing video. I love all the examples you listed and how they all make sense together. The terminology you use, like "Uncanny Valey of Animation," is also very well-made. It's trippy and fulfilling!

It is obvious that the vibe they where going for was funny and goovy and i think the animators had fun whilst making them.
