I am listening to Golden Fool, Tawny Man book 2 by Hobb and I finally got to that chapter that just shows off her greatness!

Glad your okay! I can handle tell-don't-show style of writing when it's a fast-paced story. (Brian Bowyer comes to mind.) You're right, it's like oral storytelling, sitting around a campfire and listening to the elder kinfolk tell tales.
