Easy on The Canon - Seriously you said push a button scroll the wheel around till you hit you focus point and press the shutter button to set. Try to shoot that action sports shot you just missed BUT WAIT then another shot is setting up that needs top center focus what were those 3 buttons.

Yes it will become easy but I'm not sure it is easier than the Nikon to me seem a bit more complicated. I wonder how this pairs with back button focus - Will you need to press a forth button on the canon?

Very useful info, Paul, thank you.
I recently bought a 2nd hand D5 to take wildlife pictures with, and through your channel I have realised that auto mode will keep you from getting what you want out of your photography.

Great video! Just one question: is there a possibility where you can quickly change between Af-modes?

If you are doing for example a family photoshoot where they are sometimes still and sometimes moving do you switch back and forth between AF-S and AF-C or just you just set it at AF-A so the camera can switch back and forth based on when the subjects are moving or not?

What is also great about Canon DSLR's (I have the R6 mkII) is the various AF points including the flexible focus points. If I am shooting a single subject then I would pick One-Point AF, especially for Bokeys, I can increase the aperture with a mechanical shutter. For fast-moving subjects, I normally use the electronic mode on my R6MK2, I normally go for 'Spot' AF or the cross point or sometimes the expanded AF point. I am normally not fussed with electronic shutter mode. For me, I will use a a mid ranged aperture, maybe 4.0 - 5.6 and most likely cover the entire area. But for shooting multiple subjects, the flexible AF points are amazing. I can focus on larger areas horizontally as well as squared and vertically. If I have two or three subjects sitting on a settee? No problem, I can bring all of them into focus horizontally using one of the flexible AF points. If I want to focus on a single subject vertically, then I can bring the subject into focus vertically from head to toe using one of the flexible AF points and putting the rest of the composition out of focus without me even having to rotate my camera, There are three of them on my MK2. I use them a lot and it allows me to bring my entire subject into focus whilst also putting the rest of the composition out of focus. I can also use these for Bokerys too instead of using One-Point AF where the entire subject won;t be in focus as much whereas the fleixible AF modes will allow me to focus on my subject from head to toe, entirely and get me a nice Bokey.

Hi, awesome explanation. But I'm trying to find the answers for a couple of questions regarding Nikon D3000 focusing things:

1. How to focus on a group of people so I can have all the faces in focus? AF-C and AF-A highlighting only random focusing points which are not always (mostly never) faces or points I need in focus

2. Doing panorama photo (nature, mountains, etc) - how to have all in focus, not just only subject on photo?

Thanks

Thank you so much for being concise and not acting like a high faluting photographer even though you are an expert. Straight to the point. Thanks for keeping it real and on point.

Let be real here, people who use auto mode in a DSLR, shouldn't be getting a DSLR. It's quite insulting if you ask me.

Plus, I'm using the same Nikon D3400 DSLR which makes it a very good bonus for this tutorial. Once again, Thank you very much!

Is there a joy stick option like on the Nikon ? By the time I push the button and turn to dial to where I want to focus I'll lose my subject, especially when shooting sports events.

Hello. Great video on AF. However, I do have a question. What's the connection between 'Meter Mode' and 'Auto Focus'? To be more precise, If I select matrix metering and then for Auto Focus, I select a single point, will it read light using matrix metering or just that one single point?
