The "Everything wrong with Dying Light" video has some really good points about this game, one being that when Rais tells his soldiers to "Kill him", the first thing they do is step closer to be within melee distance, despite having assault rifles pointed at Cranes face already

better then DL2

And we have Dying Light 2 where you can predict everything and whole fucking plot is being decided at the start with saving or killing hakon.

So, I think that this has gotta do less with better animations than DL2, and more different kinds of models needing different kinds of animations.

Crane's always got a head, the camera is positioned just a little in front of it, but otherwise, crane is a full model, not just arms and legs on occasion.

So, they had to animate with the model rather than a 1st person rig (like you can see in Source). The whole game is like that, to the point that if you do somehow break the camera, crane's model stays the same, your hands don't orient with the camera. Dying Light was animated from 3rd person, which makes for more cohesive animations like this, and with how the camera is, it still made sense.

Which, I haven't poked around in the game files, I don't know what Crane's model looks like in terms of bones and camera placement, but this is my best guess.
