What really happened to the Bani Qurayza Jews? Were they traitors or they were betrayed? Why did Prophet Muhammad massacre the Bani Qurayza Jews in Arabia?
The case of "Banu Qurayza" was a case of execution of a verdict given by the court in which Judge was selected by the Banu Qurayza for their treachery and the verdict was as inscribed in Torah. They flourished under the Muslim rule in Spain. The Muslims of Medina welcomed Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him (pbuh)). Majority of citizens of Medina had accepted Islam before Hazrat Muhammad (sm) migrated to Medina. When the pagan (non-muslim) pilgrims of Medina visited Mecca for pilgrimage, they met Muhammad (sm) and became Muslim. The fact was that Hazrat Muhammad (sm) after he had migrated to Medina from Mecca, created a State in Medina by drawing a constitution named “Medina Charter”, first constitution in the world. All parties, be it Jews, Idolaters, Pagans, Muslims or else signed the Charter. Each group had equal rights in terms of religious, social, economic and all other sectors of life and could perform those in their own way. But in case of defence, all the parties would fight together. In the battle of Oudh, The Prophet managed to collect 1000 men against 3000 enemy soldiers. But just before the battle started, 300 of the men under the leadership of a Jew-leader, had left the arranged battlefield. At this the Medina force became weak and suffered a big damage, though the enemies fled the battlefield with great loss. In case of the ‘Battle of Trench’, the Jews of Medina, Banu Qurayza group, in conspiracy with the enemies allowed the enemy troops to enter Medina from their side of defence. But they were defeated/repelled by the Muslims. Had they not been defeated, there would be no Muslim in the world. At this the Jews violated the constitution and had to face the trial as per the Constitution. Banu Qurayza selected a Judge to trial their treachery. The Judge delivered his judgement as prescribed in the Torah, Book of the Jews. Torah says in Deut verse 20: 10-11: “When thou comest right unto a city of fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it. And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee and they shall serve thee. And if it makes no peace with thee, but will make war against thee then thou shalt besiege it. And when the Lord thy God hath delivered it unto thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword. But the women and the little ones and the cattle all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof shalt thou take unto thyself, and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies which the Lord thy God hath given thee”. So, the punishment was under a trial, in which Muhammad (sm) was not a part. Even, he was not present at the trial nor at the time of execution of the verdict. So, when the judgment was as per the Book of the Jews, judge was selected by them, then nobody could go against the verdict. Banu Qurayza group accepted the verdict. It was not that Hazrat Muhammad (sm) gave the verdict nor he selected the Judge. The casualty maximum was 600-700. Moreover, even today, the punishment of treachery is like this, capital punishment. The punishment is the same for one or for hundreds. Moreover, the women and children of Banu Qurayza got family to live with and not like that when Jew women and girls were taken away, driven like anything by the soldiers of the Neo-Assyrians, Babylonians or by other conquerors of the Jews. Half-necked, topless pictures of the ladies, girls are in the religious books of the Jews that move anybody with tears. It is not proper to discuss an incident 1500 years ago about any race/religion sitting in the 21st century. The period we are discussing was ‘Late Antiquity’ or former times when there was no rule. ‘Might was Right’ that time. No international rule was there. Conquer or be conquered. Kill or be killed, so cannot be compared to the present-day-World. Moreover, since verdict of Banu Qurayza case came under a trial and under a constitution, there is no scope to call it a massacre/genocide. We do not call the killings of innumerable (may be millions, BCE 720, BCE 708 ) number of people by the Neo-Assyrians nor by the Babylonians (1,250,000 in BCE586), nor killings in Iberian Peninsula nor in Europe as massacre but we call this case (Banu Qurayza) which was trailed in tribunal so. Moreover, even today (Middle age or Modern age), we can refer hundreds of thousands of genocides around the world. Prophet Moses (pbuh) killed 3,000 of his men: When Prophet Moses (pbuh) was away for 40 days on Mount Sinai after the Ten Commandments and the laws and Ordinances had been given to Moses (pbuh) (Exod. xxxiv), the Jews worshiped a calf made by melting gold, violating the law of God “not to worship anything, anybody, except Allah (God)”. At this Moses (pbuh) ordered “Go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour … and there fell of the people that day 3000 men,” (Old Testament. Exod. xxxii. 27-28). The Lord repented of the evil which He thought to do unto His people (Exod. xxxii.14). Some genocides/pogroms: Neo-Assyrians invaded and destroyed Kingdom of Israel in 720 BCE and the rest of the population were carried away as slaves into Assyria. 185,000 were killed and unknown number of inhabitants were either killed or shifted to Assyria in slavery.
