It all starts AT THE TOP, Kings traditionally have many wives, rich men have mistresses and poorer people get street girls. Even the current King lives with his girlfriend/2nd wife/mistress. At the lower end, as pointed out here, it's economic necessity due to POVERTY. Increasing the standard of living for the poor would be a first step but the Government isn't interested in that.
Another reason not mentioned here, and this will seem strange to many, is girls are looking for a rich husband to whisk them away, many older Western men fall in love with theses girld and do marry them.

Government restrictions on mail order brides has made this situation worse. There are millions of unmarried men in the US that would marry these girls before they turned to prostitution, but the governments have made it so difficult that the girls do not have that option. Being a mail order bride would be a better option for many of these girls.

800,000 Thai children are prostitutes? I don’t think so. If there is that many, where are they hiding? What is the age of consent? Is a 16-18 year old considered a child? In most Asian countries the legal age is 16. (In Japan it was 13 but recently changed.)The big difference that bothers Western sensibilities is the age gap between a young girl and the lecherous old man.

None of those s** workers are clothed in sack cloth clothing. None of them are forced in any fashion, to do this kind of work. They escape the "farm life" because that want for more. I'm sorry but I don't accept that parents would just accept and encourage their daughters to become sex workers and expect them to give them money. Prstitution is everywhere in Thailand, not just in the Western Tourist areas. In fact the Prostitutes in the Tourist areas are at the top when it comes to their income. However, most prostitution occurs in Thailand with Thai male customers. The conditions for those women is terrible, but the media doesn't mention it. Also, most of the Prostitutes who are interviewed lie about what they do with their money. They don't send money back to their families, they buy expensive products and jewellry. I lived in Thailand for 28 years, and never once went to Pattaya. I always lived and worked in non touristy towns. In the past I would see the women as beinf sex objects, but aftr a few years, I saw that the Thai Prostitutes are savvy and manipulative and they were the ones doing the using. So, when I heard of Western men being ripped off, I would smile.

My college professor told me that prostitution is very legal in Thailand.
& it also included in their country's Tourism destination.
My college professor along with her fellow tourist had a tour in Thailand back in 2000.
It is also included in their travel list are d nightclubs in Bangkok & Phuket.
They had a tour there by a bus.
They even toured in a nightclub where there was huge glass window with prostitute girls to choose from. Our professor said that they were all fully naked. With number tags taped on their genitals or in their nipples. She & her fellow tourist were very upset they got there.
My professor was an elderly woman.

Very stupid to think you can stop the world's oldest profession. Everybody takes advantage of everybody at one point. If you want to stop human trafficking, you have to improve the communities in which these girls come from. But since people who target human trafficking rather target a juicy bars or strip clubs instead of improving these 3rd world communities in South East Asia, this problem will NEVER be solved and history kind of proves it.
