"being colorblind is saying your heritage doesnt matter" yes, exactly, thats the point. everyone is an individual. there is no kinship based on the color of your skin

Something that I think Zootopia does well is taking into account experiences from childhood shaping a persons views as they grow. Judy is bullied by a fox when she was little and Nick was bullied by "prey" animals when he was little. Those experiences shape their outlook as they grew up. Judy has a reasonable fear of foxes because a fox bullied her when she was a child. Nick has a distrust of non-predators because he was attacked and humiliated by a group of them when he was little. Those events shaped their lives and its not something they can erase But they both choose how they respond to animals around them. In the end, they are able to look past those traumatic events and grow a great long-lasting friendship.

I’m surprised people don’t often talk about an alternative prejudice showcased by Zootopia, the interpretation that predators represent masculine traits. I’ve definitely seen a similar thing to what was mentioned about subconscious race bias applied to my gender when I’m with a group of women who will say “oh, he’s not like other guys, he’s gay” implying an implicit bias against other men, as though the fact that I’m gay would exclude me from that when in reality it’s condemning that side of me as a man and showing prejudice against a group.

I couldn't agree more with you guys, on everything. It's a never ending work to get rid of our bias. But it's the right thing to do.

Here's the problem I have with Judy's apology. She ends it by self-deprecating, calling herself the "dumb bunny", and accepting the bias of HER biological group as true, as if that stoop makes it better that she mistreated him. An apology shouldn't be about putting yourself down. Admitting you made a mistake and taking responsibility for that is entirely different from making that mean you are a bad person who is exactly what negative stuff everyone has always gotten wrong about you. Good people make mistakes alll the time. And they don't have to put themselves down in order to change and do better. Just sayin.

I wish they didn’t skip the scene where Nick imitated a “predator”. His trauma was being attacked for being a fox. Her trauma was being attacked by a fox.

About the only times someone saying "you're so articulate" isn't insulting is when you are speaking to a performer who relies on being extremely articulate or when you are complimenting somebody on their progress in learning a new language. Even then, it still sounds extremely patronizing.

This aged like milk. The woke turned out to be even worse than the neo-nazis and skinheads in terms of racism and intolerance.
The messaging of the movie still holds, it just represents different demographics than was initially thought.

Prejudice is a normal part of the psychological brain from what i read. It was a survival mechanism to protect yourself from others that are different then yourself.

Implicit bias is a tricky thing to recognise in yourself. I didn’t realise how much bias I had against people from different backgrounds or queer people until I started interacting with people from other backgrounds. Also, being able to blend in with society when you don’t because you’re part of a minority group, in my case queer, can bring out the biases of others because they don’t realise you’re part of the group they’re disrespecting.

I appreciate you bringing this up. As I watched this episode, I realized that I unintentionally did this to my family member last week. I took my mom to the U.S. Embassy and said a comment over the phone to my sister about “foreigners”. I could hear my sister’s tone that I had hurt her feelings because America is not her native home, while it is mine. After watching this episode about taking ownership and learning from our mistakes, I called her to apologize and let her know that I will work on my bias. Hopefully my whole family can heal and learn to be one, embracing the beautiful cultures that binds us all. ❤
