Count specific words in Excel

What if Call of Duty appears twice or thrice inside the string? How am i going to count them also

What if I have a list of data some are empty and some are full of different numbers. I want to know how many cells have data in them and I don't care what the data is I just want to count it only if it has data in it ???

This is great! What happens if 'Call of Duty' appears at the start and end of a text in a cell, the formula will only count it as 1 rather than 2 - how do you do that?

Hi. Thanks for the tips! I have an odd situation where countif doesn't work correctly. A spreadsheet was created and has several rows of information in one cell. I need a countif for specific names in that column. However, the name can be listed in a group of other names and should not be counted if it's in a group of names but is not the bolded name.

For example: I will use the made up names Sterling/Gold/Platinum. Gold is who I'm counting in this column. However, if Gold is in a group of names, and another name is in bold, then I don't count Gold. The name in bold is counted instead. I can't use filter because of the seemingly unfriendly formatting of the cells having rows of data in one cell.

To further explain with examples: I will place an asterisk next to names that are bold. If Gold is alone, that name is always counted.

I am checking Column C for how many times Gold is listed, unless Gold is with another name that's in bold. Examples:

Column C:

Row 1: Main titles
Row 2: Subtitles

Row C3:
Company: That place
Request: Yes
Notes: Random length
Address: Over there
Name: Gold
Job Complete: No
Followup: Sure thing

Row C4:
Company: That place
Request: Yes
Notes: Random length
Address: Over there
Name: Gold/Sterling*
Job Complete: No
Followup: Sure thing


Row C5
Company: That place

In this group, Gold should be counted only twice. Doing this manually can open doors to a lot of mistakes. And this process is repeated for many names and in at least 18 columns.

The rows of data goes for a long way and have a lot of information to manually evaluate. I've considered offering to rebuild for improved usability, but I'm thinking a great deal of change is not desired. So I need to figure out how to make this friendly for the spreadsheet copy my team uses.
