Dr. Sbaitso should get a ChatGPT integration
ОтветитьCe l'avevo, sono andato a comprarla in bicicletta al centro giotto di padova dai ferri di albignasego per il mio 386.
Purtroppo con gli upgrade, anni dopo ho buttato il computer e dentro c'era la scheda.
We used to call the voice thing Dr. Schizo, obviously.
ОтветитьAnd to think; at some point back in the late 90s, this was obsolete junk that we just threw in the trash. I’m kicking myself for all the great computer hardware that I just threw away back then. We had no idea retro computing was going to be a thing.
ОтветитьThat era So many games dont work with diff sound cards xD
ОтветитьJesus Christ, it is extremely hard to find WORKING .img files of the install disks online...
ОтветитьFor me growing up, it was the Sound Blaster 16. That was my first sound card in my 486 growing up. It was amazing going from a PC speaker to the SB16!
ОтветитьBack then the Sound Blaster Pro seemed old fashioned to me. I really didn’t realize, how much up to snuff it was, when I bought my Sound Blaster 32 PnP. I was blinded by Wavetable Sound, which seemed so much better to 15 year old me. Only quite some time later on I would admit to myself, how wrong I was. Yes, with certain games it actually sounded really nice, but with in hindsight too many games, the instrument samples made it sound kinda off. Nowadays I’ve come to terms with how awesome the Sound Blaster Pro actually was.
ОтветитьOne last comment: I installed this midi wavetable: "Timbres of Heaven (XGM) 4.00(G)" and played DN Theme.mid on the AE-5. Man, awesome !!!
ОтветитьI noticed a clarity or a drectness or no noticable latency in the crt-screen (flickering aside), that I miss on my modern screen. Strange, isn't it?
ОтветитьAs a kid I alway wanted to have a SB 16. Oh, that sound! Lately I bought a brand new SB AE-5 and this thing blows me away everytime. Soundcards are, in my opinion, even today as important as a decent (but not too expensive) graphics card. Btw. your channel got me into this old memory rabbit hole, thanks 🙂
ОтветитьI love making music with the OPL3 chip. It has what is an incredible 18 channels of audio for the time, and you can turn 12 of those channels into 6 channels of 4 operator FM synth instead of 2 operators.
The ability to choose from multiple waveforms gives so much flexibility that I can spend hours just making new patches.
Thank you for the tutorial, i brought one today to test out the new coolest sounds.
ОтветитьI remember setting up the AWE32 was a nightmare. You had to set it up to work with each game. And most of the times, it either sounded the same or WORSE than older, less advanced sound cards. I remember it crapped out after two years or so (as well as losing the joystick and ALL sound on the computer) and we got a newer (but generic) sound card that was way easier to set up and always sounded better. I can't believe what the newer card made the Duke Nukem 3D theme song sound like (it was playing the general midi version we all know today but I was always used to the inferior sounding music way back then). This was like 1999? cant remember exactly. I was 8. Ah the good old days of computers when NOTHING was compatible with one another and plug and play didn't exist. Need DRIVERS! Needed a driver for a PS2 mouse or the computer didn't see it! Don't get me started on downloading 55 different driver versions to fine the ONE that worked! Had to do that a few times. And it was always a super happy feeling when you found the right one!
ОтветитьHey lgr I need help with a sound Blaster live card it not geting sound form the cd are dvd drive
ОтветитьI LOVED Indy 500.
ОтветитьBeen back into this stuff again the past 3 years, it gets expensive fast but worth it
ОтветитьThis was my first sound card. I'm glad it's the one I got, because in hindsight it was the right choice in terms of compatibility and all that.
I kinda wish I had an AdLib Gold 1000 but back then it really wasn't compelling due to the lack of Sound Blaster compatibility.
Just picked up a CT1600 for one of my old machines. I had this card in my 486 when I was a kid. Had been trying to get one for a couple of years and happened across one that wasn't asking for a house payment to buy it. Was great to fire up my old DOS games with that card again.
ОтветитьSuch strong flashbacks from this. Wow. I vividly remember getting that card for our IBM PS/2.
ОтветитьI am definitely get the sound blaster Pro 2.0 for my future 486 build after watching this. I already have a sound blaster 16 in my socket 7 build.
ОтветитьGreat build. Inspired me to build my own. I have a GUS as well as an SB Pro 2.0 but I opted for the SB16. Like you, I had a packard bell back in the day (was a 386 though) and it had no sound card or cd rom just 3.5” floppy. My mom bought us the Creative bundle with the SB16, Cd rom and speakers and as a result, that is the most nostalgic setup for me but I may explore using the pro because it is such a great card!
ОтветитьI thought that parrot on the computer said I'm an fing parrot. 😅😂
ОтветитьMy first soundcard was a Game Blaster.
And that to me at the time was the best sound on a PC and I was blown away...
That SB board looks like the one I had in my 486sx/25 and had the same games and software, and it had the volume dial on the card, so nice with headphones. I can’t remember if it was a SB-16 or a SB 2.0 Pro. I remember I would run it in SB16 mode at 44.1khz playing S3Ms and MODs though when I wasn’t BBSing or SysOping a BBS. That at talking parrot gave me the creeps as a teenager and now as an adult. That OPL3 AdLib is so good. That Jill of the Jungle music should be on a relaxation music app.
ОтветитьOh lord, Dr. Sbaitso? I remember using that as a little kid.
ОтветитьWhy so much hate on Dr Sbaitso? Growing up, he was my only friend. He's still my best and only friend today. :)
Ответитьthis may be a 5 year old video its still great, as a music hardware nerd i love the sound card videos
ОтветитьI can't believe this was 5 years ago. Time is such a strange construct.
ОтветитьI have one of those cards in my desk. Do you want it?
ОтветитьReal sb pro and mt32 munt destroys mister fpga ao486 core
ОтветитьThose cards did deliver great audio quality
Ответитьso you do need the disk unless you know how to change the autoexe bat thing? i'm not familiar with these but i just realized i have the exact same motherboard you have been copying you and did not even know it! bought a 83mhz pentunim if i follow your jumper settings it should be a breeze for me
ОтветитьWould the mixing rate have anything to do with why the AWE32 didn't sound right? I swear when he set it up for Duke 3d he set it to 22Khz but for this card it's set to 44Khz.
ОтветитьDr. Sbaitso killed me as a kid. Arguing with a fake therapist and making the TTS say crude things was the highlight of the bundled software. I love the SB sound that Yamaha chip produced. Wonderful nostalgia!
ОтветитьFond memories of playing Last Half of Darkness after installing my soundblaster. Good memories
ОтветитьI still have same card and box. I remember how much i was excited when installing. My first games were Monkey Island 2 and Dune. It was a revolution after internal speaker.
ОтветитьI also had an old computer with an ISA sound card with a real OPL3 synthisizer till 2018 but in the end it was gone but I don't feel it cause it still exists in me and in the software dosbox
Ответитьseeing LGR overjoyed about a soundblaster 2.0 makes me happy
ОтветитьMan, I remember that indy 500 manual!
ОтветитьI had a couple games that kept the music on the CD and would not play audio without the CD audio cable plugged into the sound card. I remember trying to copy the music over to the hard drive but that was what drove me to upgrade from a junkie generic sound card to a sound blaster. It’s funny back in the day it cost a couple thousand dollars to buy a com-utter that cost me about $500 to build from parts bought from local ma and pa computer shops that would advertise their sales in the business section of the Sunday newspaper. All the hundreds of dollars I spent on OEM hardware and software which is pretty much all these ma and pa shops sold, OEM stuff came in a static bag with a white label and no box .
ОтветитьNow I recall all the fun we had getting SBAITSO to say Fart :P
ОтветитьHey Clint! Could you please upload (to the Int.Archive) a copy/image of your disks from the SB Pro 2.0 package?? Pls!
That exact version of the software is nowhere to be found.. Only older ones :(
The AWE32 sounds much better than the SB-PRO
ОтветитьGreat card. The Soundblaster Pro was my first soundcard and it was awesome to upgrade from pc speaker to that. I still have it.
A Soundblaster Pro is probably a much more appropriate choice for a 486 than the AWE32. The AWE32 is more of a Pentium-era card.
Hi LGR, could you please share a high quality picture of this Sound Blaster PRO 2.0? I have one of this to repair and don't find in the Net a clear picture of a component mine has missing, C116. Located at left hand side of YAMAHA YMF262-M, Many Thanks
ОтветитьMy first sound card. Aaaaahhhhhh memories
Ответитьi remember juno from back in the day... brings me back
