They get to choose their workhours and workdays freely. Prostitution is also well compensated for the amount of hours and acts. It's not the case that they can't study or do not have any other skills. Many could work as hotel cleaners, cutting bushes and mowing grass and in factory work. The wages in such lines of work are a fraction though. In some lines of work they do suffer harassment etc. It's obvious that they are kind of fearless when it comes to having sex with an unknown man and they cannot become pregnant so they do not have that risk ... So, all the scales are tilted in the way that prostitution is the go to thing (workhours and workdays, compensation, alternatives and harassment in those, taking advantage of the fact of not getting pregnant). Prostitution does not increase societal wealth though, only production does. Basically they do a line of work that is not a contribution to society in a productive (value adding) sense.

Things has change in France in the good way. Prostitutes clients are treated as criminals now. So street prostitution has fallen down like snow in the sun. Less prostitution means less drug, abuse, crimes....etc. it works well and only escorts exist in appartments with high incoms.
