From the same concert, react to “Harvester Of Sorrow”. You won’t be disappointed.

The helicopters were the police arm of the KGB. There early reports of 3 to 7 people being crushed to death during the concert, along with about the same being beat to death by the police. Of course it was all later denied by Russian authorities. It was a free concert on a Russian Air Base. Most of the military members shown in the crowd were Airmen. The "authority" was police.

This is what happens when you have a concert on a big airfield, with Sikorsky helicopters flying overhead and military soldiers who want to let off some steam along with a crazy amount of fans going crazy.

1. It was a FREE show
2. First in the history of Russia and Soviet Union before it actually collapsed
3. 1.6 million I think is an overstatement, it was much less than that but the crowd was massive
4. Some people got injured (according to some records, 52 died, but hopefully didn't)
5. Over 10 thousand soldiers were guards at this gig, they were pretty violent trying to calm down the crowd with clubs and got glass bottles thrown at them, lots of injuries, that was wild
6. Military choppers hovering above the crowd were used to cool people down (screaming at the crowd, not sure if they were hitting them)
7. Musicians ate already cold big macs 🤣delivered on Chayka car (was considered almost like a limousine at that time) from a McDonalds (and there were quite few back then I believe)

Just some of the facts I got from the documentary about this gig (in Russian). Wish I was there... but I was too young) Or maybe it's good I wasn't there. Cuz the gig was WILD!

Check out Harvester of Sorrow from that same concert. Probably their best performance of that song.

You get turned on by these men controlling this number of others. This is power. You're reacting to pure masculinity. You feel it in your bones, and you love it. Pure power and control.

1.6 million fans going crazy there is nothing like it! Metallica broke metal into the mainstream! Without bands like Metallica and Megadeth when I was a teen I may never have got into Metal like I am today! The first time I hard Master of Puppets that was it for me, I was hooked on metal and haven't looked back since! They are true metal Gods!

I don't think many things could top the feeling of what they felt from the crowd. I've never done it but i did watch my kids being born and nothing has touched that. Still would have been cool to be at that show though.

Late to the Party.......
One Reason the Helicopters were hoving was to try and "Cool" the crowd....... If I heard/remember correctly, they had 5-8 deaths from Heat Stroke at this all day Festival.....

The context of the gargantuan crowd is tell telling. This was the end of communism in the U.S.S.R. The power of the ANTI communist student groups in the soviet states had brought the collectivist leadership to a crossroad. One of the compromises was that the college students wanted an international music festival in the capital, since live and recorded music had been under government control since the Bolshevik almost a 100 years before. Most of the crowd had never seen a big rock show must less foreign acts as those were not allowed to tour the Soviet states. This was a massive cathartic release of oppressed soul energy in response to an authoritarian regime that had lasted thru generations... They are not just regular attendees but nearly a million at their first rock out...And got to see some of the best...I am a spiritual person. The godhead created music and you can feel that spirit from the crowd and musicians. Music is the one universal language and created for that purpose...

I’ll bet this was fucking CRAZY!! 1 million young people who had been suppressed by communism their entire lives and finally getting a chance to just cut loose and live!! Kirk Hammett is one of the finest guitar players that has ever lived. Hatfield is great too but Hammett is a special special talent.
