I am a North Indian and this kind of issues barely affect us but being a part of this nation i feel sorry for the Sri Lankans they own the sea of theirs and we have no right to invade their seas. On behalf of north indians although it doesn't bother any indian directly but as being a good neighbour i apologize to you. Media don't cover these issues the way they should i didn't even knew that fishing a dispute between Indian and Sri Lankan Tamils all i knew was Sri Lankan Tamils were the minority and they were treated badly.

Weird why Indian media hasn't shown this yet, now I am wondering if LTTE was funded by fishermen or local tamils! $50 million per year constitutes to approx. 200 crore INR (taking avg. Dollar conversion in early 2000s $40). And this 200 crore is the loss incured to Sri lanka, not sure how humongous overall economy is on Indian side!

This is a really popular topic here in sri lanka, but sri lankan government does not take further actions inorder to stop this beacuse of the debt crisis. Sri lanka heavily depend on indian loans and politians acts likes they never know about this. 😢

There needs to be regulation or the fisheries will deplete completely. A license and fishing quota regime needs to be put in place on both sides. Eventually Sri Lankan fishermen have to get bigger boats or they wont be able to compete on cost but unlimited number of big boats is also not a solution. Some people have to leave the industry and find other jobs. Maybe some of the Indian boats can pay the Sri Lankan govt a fee to fish in Sri Lankan waters and the govt use the fee to create alternate employment for ex fishermen. Or the Indian govt can limit the number of big boats and the excess boats sold to Sri Lankan fishermen.

The sad part is that neither lawmakers from India or Sri Lanka want to do anything to solve this issue. Both sides use it to gain political support from the population to come into power. In the end the Sri Lankan fishermen and the Sri Lankan economy lose out.
