Simple microscope using a laser pointer and a magnifying glass. This differs from the water drop method and produces results more like a traditional microscope with enlarging via focal length changes. This is not spherical like water drops so the image can be projected many feet away from the wall without excessive spherical aberration. Depending on light emitting power of the laser vs. ambient room lighting, images could be enlarged to 30 meters or more.

This simple combination of a laser pointer, preferably with a secondary wider angle lens, and a regular GLASS magnifier creates an extremely useful PROJECTION MICROSCOPE.

got any ideas on using a telescopic projecting the image or even filming it using a basic telescope , and remember cheap as in not buying high cost equipment lol , as it can be rather tedious and my eye gets fatigue just looking at the moon with this thing which puts a damper on the excitement of looking at the stars > this challenge if you chose to except it , thanks Dan

you guys are SO TECHNICAL... i mean, i could just imagine dan going through the trouble of looking up the assembly instructions when putting together something; or at worst, it's operating specifications!! watts, current drawn, etc, etc. sometimes, instead of assembling things by hand, he has to bolt the parts together. now, that's hard!

Thank you for sharing your investigations. I wish I would have had this resource in the days that I taught high school. It is the sort of thing(s) that would go over so well in "science club" to stimulate the kids natural drive towards investigation. Unfortunately we didn't have personal computers in those days (60-70s). I'm now retired but this stuff still gets my old brain kicking. AND I'm sure there are thousands of kids who DO tune into your videos and YOU ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE!!

Not sure if anyone is still reading these comments but if anyone plays with this you might want to consider adding a mirror to the configuration and using that to bounce the image onto the wall. I didn't have a laser handy but just tried with a little $3 Cree flashlight off Amazon and a similar Magnifying glass stand Dan was using with a small beauty mirror and got similar projection with the added benefit of the sample being able to keep the sample horizontal rather than vertical.

Is the laser used because most affordable lenses are chromatic? This is neat to me because I was born with nuclear cataracts and have never had a clear view through a microscope.

There is empty magnification involved for the larger images though, if this one is adjusted then it can be a really powerful microscope:)

There is no serious application of using a laser except in an emergency where you didn't have a microscope. It yields up a totally distorted image when projected and an ugly green color to boot. Here is what you do if you want stunning videos on your wall. Get a microscope with at least decent achromat/plan achromat objectives. Put the Sony HDR-CX110 camcorder up to the eyepiece and project it in full 1980 X 1080 onto a 42: HDTV or larger screen for razor sharp true color video images. Using my Olympus BH-2 Trinocular and a special design FX lens I have has allowed me to project crystal clear true color videos images on my 42" plasma TV up to 10,000X magnification. I have preserved on my SDHC card
a moving video image scanning a 1mm size cross section stained "pine needle"
that is 28 feet long and it's true color and very sharp. Try to do that with a laser
pointer. There is no substitute for excellence. Kids are being taught a lot of mediocrity today--education is definitely going backwards in this country. What people think is neat is actually stupid!

Actually this projection image is a hologram. It means that image is not blurry, it includes all 3D information. You can focus it by using angular spectrum propagation on computer.
