It's almost ironic that you mention Unit Tests. We've stopped using them entirely, and rely on functional and integration test automation written by a single SDET. Our code is far simpler, we develop more quickly, coding is more enjoyable, refactoring is easier, and our application has less bugs too. Zen sometimes means ignoring "best practice".
