I was so hyped to play this so replayed Last Light and then went into Exodus and found it awful. You die soooo quickly (I played LL on Ranger and its definitely quicker than that) and then you have to slog through a load of samey stuff again.

A couple of things to note about the game: the point about fighting in light vs dark, and the second being the translated dialogue. The first point is there is a reason why games make you adjust your TV/monitor settings at the beginning. This would allow for better level immersion. Now, even I had to adjust these settings through my playthroughs. My 2nd point is I've read people's comments about how the original Russian version fits the dialogue better. In translating a game or even a movie, or anime, things tend to shift in translation. I also laughed a bit when you spoke about this in your video while showing the end of the Taiga level. It was explained throughout that level that the kids who grew up in that area still behaved as such. It was a literal translation which was done on purpose. While I feel it isn't a true 10 out if 10 game, I thought it was a good game with a good story to tell in the end.

I wouldn't say its over or underrated and, yes the cutscenes/dialogues don't have that flow like normal one. BUT for me every section was great train, tunnel and land. If someone would say that the game is to easy while playing on reader mode then...
You are lost. If someone says the graphics are not good enough, then get enhanced edition🦆

Yeah, it's a beautiful looking game at least. The rest of it is kind of questionable; to wonder if it is really good like. This has been a notion that I had since its inception and the other 2 games in the series were actually quite memorable, so much so that I still have memories of the moments in those games which make me feel like I want to replay them, which I sometimes do but the fact is is that they don't have nothing to add of value in the sense of if you have played them once or twice, third time relating to some segments of the games start to feel more like a chore. Challenging moments or "challenging'' unskippable moments like the fight with the Librarian that make me just regret being there, in game while overall Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light do have some other moments of exposition that just portray stories pertaining to humanity and for instance the super natural like Khan that guides you and is sort of a mentor kind of familiar to Sgt. Price form Call of Duty and the singing pipes segment in the game and when both Khan and Artyom are trying to escape but at the same time are battling for their sanity from the grip of the Dark Ones...

Moments like those are to me far more memorable than an open world and having no icons or map markers as a guiding hand and the challenge or the joys of exploration and this or these (moments) are in essence what I miss so much about the original Metro game and its successor: Last Light. Even in Stalker games what made those games so memorable to me are amongst the location, exploration gameplay and atmosphere moments of exposition where bits and pieces of the lore shine through.

Metro Exodus however nice looking and beautiful it is... Just feels kind of pointless and on top of that it makes me kind of depressed, where in the (2) games previous there was a certain sense of community and togetherness sort of underground coziness, that all went out of the window in the last installment of the game where even though having purchased it relatively early in its life cycle I don't think i have played a full day of the game since then and even if I did, I spent a lot of time in game wondering and pondering about where it kind of did go wrong, now. Exodus has some positive points or "redeeming qualities'' as they say which is sort of the underlying thread weaved throughout the game of survival and perseverance and I guess love and family to an extent: hope in short but I feel that its execution is kind of poor.

I am still trying to play and finish the game but I constantly feel challenged and yearning for the old, underground and corridor oriented experiences and exposition of that world in particular and again I have to emphasize that I do appreciate the game trying to take off into the wider, more open world and as I should feel bad and sad about the destruction of the world in that Universe I feel more saddened by the fact that the older games are gone and that indeed they are rare in their genre and as pure games, where the world today has taken a more different approach in its design preferring the intricacies, or lack thereof, of the open world. Open world games are of course appealing because of their size and scope but often I feel pertaining to them like the narrator in the video said that or how Exodus feels like a chase going from point A to B that open worlds or open world games feel kind of the similar if not the same, sort of empty and devoid of a meaning as older more again corridor driven games have provided us with at least in this illusionary sense of having more depth and intrigue.

Stalker in this way, which is imitated but not duplicated was an exception because its open world actually felt fulfilling which is also noticeable in the sort of endless mods that it spawned that they added much more survivability like mechanics to deepen the world where in Exodus, depth wise it feels that you just have your backpack or the workbench in camp.

I can't really say that Exodus is a bad game though, it's just different to what in my opinion lies at the heart of the Metro games at least part 1 and its sequel. Exodus could have, maybe should have been an iteration on or an interpretation of that, coming later than it did.

Considering the previous metro games this game build on what made those games immersive and fun to play. The story telling and characters make you feel like they care about you the player. The atmosphere, the weapon choices, the choices to make all lead up to a great ending or a really sad ending.

novosibirsk dead city is an absolutely masterful level in every respect, stage construction narrative, atmosphere, mission structure, idea, location background and its history. The entire game was of a very high quality level. One of my favorites, both this and the entire trilogy. Probably the closest thing we got next to the stalker close to perfect

If you play on hardcore there’s plenty of tension and resources are really scarce. I’m on my first playthrough, still at Volga, but I find it very punishing, almost too much so. It seems like reckless “call of duty” or “Rambo” behavior, like sprinting anywhere, or engaging enemies without taking stock of their weapons, armor, and positioning, gets me killed. Sounds like you played a different game.

How can someone call Scam Citizen "misjudged" and a lot better than you think but call Metro Exodus "outdated and disappointing"
If Metro Exodus was a bit disappointing its only compared to masterpieces of its predecessors.
Meanwhile Scam Citizen is a souless money making scam scheme that has worse net coding than Eve Online that came out in 2000 lmao.

I think that one of the main reasons ppl praise exodus so much is because its the first metro theyve played. You are totally correct that this game was just so boring and artificially had its playtime extended, i had hope playing through it thinking “shits gonna hit the fan and its gonna be real good any minute now” and then that never came. Playing through the game i was never excited TO play the game, i was excited to move onto the next part, waiting for the fun to come, but it never does.

The OG game (and book) asked you a question: if the whole world is dead, with horrifying monsters roaming not only the wasteland above but creeping in closer, would you want to go on living? It was a poignant anti-war (specifically anti-nuclear) sentiment not seen since Fallout. Exodus just completely rug pulls that entire narrative by offering a fresh outdoor adventure, it is a callous disservice to Metro 2033. As with so many controversial games in the past, it should've been a new IP

This is the most on point review I've seen of this game. Played through it twice and while I enjoyed it, I couldn't put my finger on why it disappointed each time. I'd also like to point out how it completely abandons the overarching narrative of The Dark Ones from the first two games for a contrived "Let's Find A New Home" story that's really somehow about your wife dying? And somehow that A story is treated like a B story? Until the extrememly boring finale?

There's a weird idea in entertainment that long and drawn out is some how genuis storytelling...like the more overwritten something is, the better that game/movie/book/tv show is, you just don't even get it!! I'd love to see the Venn Diagram of people who liked "Metro Exodus" and 2019's "The Joker" because both os them have that needlessly drawn out quality to them.

the 2 horizon games are much more boring than metro exodus. there are a lot more useless things to do. I thought it was good that there was always a new challenge. like you're still in the metro, you can't go anywhere because of the radiation or others who are hostile to you and you have to search and search until you finally find a home that isn't completely contaminated and destroyed. I agree that the anxiety is missing but the metro is more oppressive than the open desert. I just don't like the humanimals. The watchers and nosalis are simply missing. i love the game the graphics and the weapon sounds of the game and am looking forward to the next one.

I disagree with you, Metro Exodus isn't overrated but it isn't perfect either. I did see the problem with the AI, there were sometimes moments when the story took a nose dive, we got out of the Metro (The namesake and the general known territory that makes Metro to the Metro we know and love). But I love it that you get to be on a train riding on the Trans - Siberian railway through post apocalyptic Soviet Union while listening to Viktor Tsoi, customizing your weapons, listen communication on the radio and interacting with your crew. The level designs were perfect to see and to enjoy, let alone to discover. Like I said the story did take a nose dive sometimes but it also gave us moments in it's story that were amazing, heartbreaking and wholesome. Just like Metro Last Light, your actions decide your outcome and in Exodus it was more detailed. Also we got the two DLCs with Sam on his way home and the two Colonels. Just the two of Colonels were awesome and heartbreaking while Sam's DLC just is funny as hell (especially after meeting the Captain) but leaves you with a bitter sweet taste. The treatment this game gets is oddly similar to the treatment S.T.A.L.K.E.R gets.

I was once like you, rolled my eyes when Ubisoft intro 'WatchDogs 2', a great departure from the original which has good narrative and genuinely feels exciting. But once I dive into WD2 and really played it, I start to find its beauty as well, it's just a different kind of fun. (To put it into perspective, the original felt like Batman or John Wick, WD2 felt like a scooby doo gang meddling about.)

This is more than JUST a point A to point B game, in fact, you were given a choice to whether go linearly or go around to explore the regions along the way. I think the game devs have very cleverly left that choice up to the players. You can speedrun through it (which I can tell from your gameplay dialogues) and kill everyone in sight, or go the long way round and enjoy the view. This game has many shadows of other games that I've enjoyed, the desert in particular brings me back to Mad Max game. That's the kind of nostalgia only a good game can bring to you.

I do agree the bugs annoy me sometimes, but coming from Ubisoft's titles, this is rather polished already. All in all, the reasons you listed are all quality-of-life things which you have put under a magnifying glass, you have to look at the game as a whole, try to understand the lore even if it bores you. You clearly came to this game with a fixed mindset, what you need to do is relax and let the game take you. Life doesn't always go the way you want, just as this game is telling us.

WOW!!! I thought this game was awesome...
Super detailed, beautiful post-apocalyptic landscapes, amazing graphics and an emotional script and story... the interlude sections on the train where notably beautiful!!!
I love the fact that enemies surrender occasionally, thats something I havent experience almost at all in games, the different story beats depending on how ruthless you are, all tying into the final act and the success and comradery of your team!!!!
The guns were brutal, charging through the irradiated ruins with the auto shotguns barrel glowing red hot was intense as F***!!!!!
I just completed it for the second time the other day got the good ending both times!!!! and it took me about 30 hours to thoroughly explore the entire game and all areas of the map...
I loved it!!!!

I don't understand the love Exodus gets at all. As a huge Metro fan (have read all the books, played the previous games etc) Exodus is so bad, I couldn't even finish it. When I heard open world Metro my mind was racing, the potential of an RPG style game taking place in the Moscow Metro/Surface would've been insane, exploring deadly access tunnels, secret passageways, haunted stations, taking jobs from factions or selling rare items obtained from the surface. It is a masterpiece waiting to be made. Instead we got bland open world check off locations on map game with zombies NOT EVEN IN THE METRO. What a joke. The addition of the humanimals (are you kidding me?) alone was an enormous red flag. 4A Games is truly not fit to adapt the Metro universe into video games. Most of the hardcore defenders of Exodus are legitimately just dumb people, you could slap the word "Metro" onto Call of Duty and they would tell you it was the best Metro game to ever have been made.

Some pretty solid points. For me, the main downfalls are the immersion breaking bugs, as well as the unsynced and corny English dubs (I guess this includes some of the writing too). In all fairness, I consider it an improvement from Last Light. I found the story in that game pretty offensively corny and cliché, especially with Anna, Pavlov, and the main villain. In exodus though, It also bothered me how there wasn’t as much supernatural stuff in this game. Aside from that though, it is one of my favourite single player games of all time. Watching your video, I got the idea that maybe we just went it with different expectations. I play these games at the pace of a fucking sloth, turn off all the lights in my room, and crank up the volume on the game. There was definitely a fair amount of pointless areas and run-on dialog, but the slower I played it, the more I really enjoyed the shinning subtleties. As a side note, I also thought the feel of the guns, sound, and customization was near perfect. Not too many will agree with that one, but that’s what I found 🤷‍♂️.

Kinda funny how opinions are either love it or hate it. Either way, 4A has a lot to improve on in the next metro, and they can definitely use this video for cleaning up the drawing board.

Agreed, as someone who’s played metro 2033 and last light multiple times, I played Exodus once and never touched it again, wasn’t interested in the story or the characters this time around and the open world felt so empty. Personally, what made the metro truly special for me was THE METRO… the Metro itself was a huge character in the previous games, the stories it told, how everyones lives were dictated by the Metro, and how it was treated like it was alive, and it made going to the surface really impactful.

I’ll never forget seeing the surface for the first time with Bourbon, or seeing the ghosts in the tunnel with Khan, or carrying that little kid on my back, or in last light having the vision of the plane crashing and the bombs going off, moments like that were missing from Exodus for me.

Imagine Bioshock 1 & 2 without Rapture, or S.T.A.L.K.E.R without the zone, it just wouldn’t work. and that’s what’s happened here IMO.
