i noticed the number 001 on my first time watching, but i just thought that he was just a veteran/returning player/winner, or he won it multiple times some time ago, and are trying to do it again or whatever. that's why he survived a lot of games for that long, that's why he wasn't fazed by all of the fucked up shit, and that's why he's older.

my wrong conclusion also didnt help when i notice that the binder started from 002 during my first watch, because i ended up thinking and screaming "see, he HAS played this before, he's the previous year's winner, that's why his file is on a different binder, so this means that theres more to him than we've seen" and thought i was right lmao (i guess i kinda am, but only the last part tho lmao)

The name Il-nam(일남) is somewhat a clue to the ending. 일남 can be seen as 'first man' for 일 means one and 남 is a word/slang meaning man. this can mean that ilnam was the planner and his name and number was kind of an easter egg.

I just don't accept the idea that there could be a consistent audience of people who enjoy murder as entertainment to begin with, let alone an audience who enjoys it so much that they spend the ridiculous amounts of money necessary to justify the absurd expenses and risks associated with the whole project, along with the personal risks they take being there-just as a premise that's distractingly implausible. I don't think the old man was scared of dying at all - since his brain tumour. I guess it's almost like a fun suiciide - as most deaths are quick.
I guess the murder night was too brutal and scary - why he screamed for it to stop.

You forgot one clue. When they play tug of war, the old man is tied to the main rope in a different way than anyone else. There’s a shot at the end - after the opponent team has fallen down - that shows his wrists locks and his teammates wrist locks and they are different.

But since there's no glow, that rules out the theory that they aren't being targeted. They want to draw your eye to the center to the character they're focusing on in that moment. I was suspicious of the old man right from the beginning because he stood out from the others for being so elderly and the way he acted throughout the show made me think there was more to him then just a person who is behind on their debts or wants to win money for his grandkids before dying. When he was killed off screen it really showed me he was involved and when we get the shot from behind of the host taking off his mask, his body shape looked exactly like the old man and you could see his hands had the skin of an old person which solidified he was behind the whole thing.

I don't watch series or TV shows all that often but luckily gave this a shot recently and man I really liked it. Hopefully we get to see more games in the future and plot lines behind the people involved along with finding out more and more about the story behind how squid games came to be and how the government/police are tied in because there is no way this is happening without a cover up manufactured by people with even more power than rich people.
