I found a fun fact that stated that olive oil was used by Athenians to do the gay diddlies, which makes Athens choosing the olive tree as more useful than a spring that would’ve been rich in fish and therefore food a hilarious thought

It's actually pretty hilarious when you realize that the stories of Athens & Atlantis could be either side continuing the ancient debate of whose better.

In the version I read about Erechtheus' conception, Hephaestus jerked into a handkerchief and threw it at Athena. The handkerchief that has Hephaestus'....genetic material...missed and fell onto the ground and made Gaia pregnant.

Athens was a nobody and then managed to rewrite Greek history so effectively that the strongest, wisest and most veloved goddess of both Zeus and mankind is...Athena. who totally existed and was akways in a special relatiobship with Athens, and the city is totally named after her, and not the othet way aroubd...

The idea of some random hero killing a snake and receiving big rewards for it is so persistent across so many disparate Indo-European cultures that it's theorized to have been a PROTO-INDO-EUROPEAN myth, and one of the very oldest ones at that.

The specifics are that there is a) a snake and/or other long reptile and b) a hero who kill said reptile, with c) the hero is in some way tangentially connected to thunder, if not an outright thunder god themselves.

See: Thor killing Jormungandr, Apollo (son of Zeus) killing Python, Zeus killing the (semi-reptilian) Typhon, etc.

I remember in my ‘Race and Ethnicity in the Classical World’ course the importance of ‘born from the Earth’ for Athenians specifically in that period to justify their citizenship law and limiting immigration (because they had just lost a grain trade) and so we get this whole mythos and philosophies from Athenian propaganda on their superiority and need to create a ‘Hellenistic’ identity. I do wonder if there was an originally disabled King of Athens though- there is one myth to the founding of Etruia where we found a corpse that may well be the boy in question.

Athena is destined to be as strong as Zeus. It was foretold that her wisdom and strength would match his own. So if Poseidon is said to be close to Zeus in terms of power level, good news, Athena is said to be the same level as Zeus (Origin of Athea ). Athena's blessings alone literally injured Ares during the Illiad. So there are two stories saying Athena is literally the second most strongest God in the Greek Pantheon.

WoW Wow wow wow ... "Gaia is primarily known for giving birth to monsters"? She's the motherloving MOTHER OF THE TITANS! She Created the sky and the ocean and is the Earth, and she mated with the sky to give birth to the first generation of Titans, Kronos among them. She's grandmother to Zeus, Hades and Poseidon.
Echidna was the "mother of monsters" in Greek myth as far as I know, but certainly not Gaia.

It’s interesting, right, that snake people isn’t where the rabbit hole ends. Poseidon was the og major olympian, the earthshaker, as discussed in the hades and persephone video, and also ruled the underworld. Could Athens have concocted this myth as a “battle of fates” for itself, or am i missing a time link?

What I've learned from binging this series is that
1. Every powerful figure, both benevolent and malevolent, in European mythology/folklore eventually leads back to Odin
2. Every Indo-European love goddess is a stepping stone on the path to get to Aphrodite (and eventually the Virgin Mary)
3. Every mythos at some point will involve an inordinate amount of snakes
4. Dammit Christianization, why you gotta do us like that?

I just had to mention this here: Cecrops, or Erechthonius, or whatever, is frequently portrayed not so much as half-man, half-snake, but as having two crocodilian legs and a really long serpentine tail.
Why am I making such a big deal aout this? Because it just struck me that King Erector Set (that's what his name sounds like to me, deal with it) looks a lot like a rather more modern creature of myth ...

Read The Greek Myths by Robert Graves - it will make a lot of sense. He argues that recurring themes such as giant snakes, rivalry between brothers, gods raping mortal women - in short, the whole greek mythic tradition is a depiction of ultra-ancient greek matriarchical societie's customs (aka Orphic tradition) and the later clashes with later patriarchical cults.

Maybe silly but I made up an alternate story for the birth of Erechtheus:
Athena commissions Hephaestus for a new set of armor, and setting himself to the task immediately he stokes his forge and begins to work. Athena begins to sweat profusely from the heat of the fire, so produces a scrap of wool cloth and wipes her brow with it. Hephaestus also begins to sweat from his labors and in turn wipes his brow with the cloth. He then tosses it to the ground, and by the time the armor is finished the infant Erechtheus had sprung from the earth, Gaia having given life to the sweat of the two gods.
