In Sam Tolkien also reveals how the ring works and corrupts its bearer. He also shows how the ring and therefore Sauron has literally no understanding or concept of humbleness that a person or being would not have any desire for power, control and domination it doesn't enter his thoughts - for Sauron this does not compute. "Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, ... And then the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it as his own, and all this could be." '...he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such villains were not mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardner was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command."

This is why the hobbits were the perfect choice to take the ring and destroy it. Sauron cant comprehend that Sam's love of gardening is the process of doing it, getting his hands dirty and seeing the plants grow. its not to 'have' a great garden and control others to tend it - Sauron misses the point completely.

I would love to learn more about Fatty Bolger. He was amazingly brave to stay behind knowing the Nazgul were searching for Frodo all while he was pretending to be Frodo. He offered himself up as bait. From the very first time I read LotR (back in about 1976), I admired Fatty. I think he does not get nearly as much respect for his bravery as he deserves.

And Sam cared for Bill the Pony for the rest of Bill's life...the only one of the Fellowship who was concerned about Bill as a living thing, and not just a bearer of burdens...it was for Sam that Gandalf gave words of aid to Bill.

I feel like Sam saw so much of the torment Frodo went threw being the ring bearer that that’s what also led him to being such a strong willed character , caring so much for Frodo, the ring couldn’t tempt him because he knew how much torture it was putting Frodo thru, he was able to persevere and overcome any temptation of the ring because of his loyalty and love he had for Frodo and his companions.

Have always loved reading this and loved it when they made movies. But to be honest i dont think we could ever live up to the writings with any movie we make. He opened so many doors for so many writers. To this day i still find myself making lil short stories and its all because if reading the hobbit then on to his other works still think the hobbit is my favorite got my kids reading it now too.

I often wonder who in the fellowship, got the biggest dong. I will go through all the members - from a (not) scientific standpoint - and come up with the most likely winner.

Gandalf is a maiar, which is like an angelic inspired creature. Looking at nudes of angels, the dongs are often small. And given that Gandalf has taken the form of an old man, it is safe to assume he got a fairly small dong. Though powerfull wearing the ring of fire.

Legolas is an elf. Elf dongs are smooth and long, but not thick. So size wise, Legolas can only compete in length, not girth, and therefore he dosent have the dong to rule them all.

Gimli is a tiny hairy dwarf. His dong is small, covered in a forrest of thick hair. Finding it is like finding gold in a mine.

Frodo, Sam, Merry & Pippin are all the same. Big feet means large dongs, and for hobbits they are all well gifted. But, compared to others, they are on the smaller side. Though Rosie aint complaining, when Samwise the brave plough her like a field.

Boromir is a great character, but with small dick energy. Mostly in to battle and war stories, he is a mans man. But all the machoness also tells a tale, of a small dong and a man trying to raise above it.

Aragorn is a ranger. A great warrior, yet a poetry minded and a laid back guy. He's got an elf to give up her imortality for him, which is a sure sign of a massive dong.

The (not) scientific conclusion is therefore, that King Elessar got the biggest dong of the fellowship and is the winner.

I, having the last name - "Gardner" and having been born on the date of Sauron's downfall, March 25th, (1952) and being a fan of Tolkien's writings since the 1960's AND being a cos-player, I at one party in my house to celebrate Sam's birthday, did play the part of Frodo Gardner, the great, great, great, great, great...well you get the idea - great grandson of Samwise Gamgee, later founder of the name/family of Gardner, later famous and influential....Brian--Lord of the Rings Fan--Gardner

Already the Ring tempted him, gnawing at his will and reason. Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dûr. And then all the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be.

In that hour of trial it was the love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbit-sense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such visions were not a mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command.

“The party tree… had been cut down during ‘the scouring.”

I think you misunderstood what scouring means. It means cleaning.

What Saruman and his henchmen did to the Shire was destructive. The “scouring” is what Frodo and his companions did upon their return, in order to try to restore it.
