hmm, i d8dnt know ps3 plays ps1... now i will have to see if my ps1 games look better with my ps3 or my ps2 with my O.S.S.C.

PS1 will always be in my heart as that was the 1st console (not portable) gaming system I bought with my own money. I've had other consoles, but they were hand me downs & I didn't have to spend a dime. Before Mario Kart my favorite racing game of all time was Jet Moto. No drifting in that game just some futuristic electric bolt to get you around corners! That just blew my mind. Also didn't know the PS3 played PS1 games. I may still have mine. (Project to look into today!) Thanks again for the Bird Seeds for my future enjoyment of my Retro Games!

I had my PS3 connected to an old CRT TV for years when I first got once back in 2008. It's difficult to read the text but it never stopped me having fun or completing games. I remember trying it on my parents large screen TV but I always preferred my CRT. My parent threw my old TV away a few years ago so I've estranged them. I'm not joking.

If you have a CRT capable of higher resolution the PS3 can output 480p, witch IMO is not better than 240p for PS1 but an option to consider

You couldn't play ps1 games from a ps2 memory card BUT you could store them there. And they barely used any of it's memory. So you could use your ps2 memory card to switch out the ps1 memory card roster by transferring back and forth. Like a huge memory reservoir

Did you also know a ps5 controller works on a ps3 if you plug them in?

My og ps3 came with composite cables

Any Ps1 collection needs Crash Bandicoot 1,2 and 3, along with Spyro 1,2 and 3.

To add to your very last point, if you don't mind repro cases, you can easily go disc only grab a repro case and come in way less than a CiB listing

I haven't seen anyone in the comment section suggest it, so I will: Armored Core! I've recently gotten into the series after Armored Core 6 was announced and it's a series I regret not playing sooner, especially because the cost of them is so high. My favorite games in the series are on PS2, but the series of course started on PS1 with the original Armored Core and its expansion sequels Project Phantasma and Master of Arena. Too many people only know From Software from 2009 onwards but before Demon's Souls they were making some of the best mecha games on the planet since 1997. Great series, doesn't get enough love.

The only thing I never liked about the visuals on PlayStation was the screen tearing that a lot of games had. Never kept from enjoying the games though.
If I were to recommend one game I see very few people talk about, it would be Soul Blade.

I wasn't familiar with Legend of Mana at all, and I had a PS1 since launch day. But it looks really cool, I think I'll search for a copy...

If you're collecting PS1 games track down Omega Boost. It's a rail shooter, kind of like Star Fox 64, but with a mech and with one of the best cheesy fmv opening cutscenes.

A lot of people may not know this but you can store ps1 save files to a ps2 memory card and then transfer it back to a ps1 memory card whenever you run out of memory card space on said PS1 memory card.

So can you actually play ps1 games today? I thought the cds had started to degrade and not likely to work for much longer.

Hdmi does not support less than 480i. Hence you lose 240p on ps1 via ps3.

I rarely hear about Future Cop L.A.P.D. and I always enjoyed the gameplay in that. It's funny that you asked right before mentioning saving on games without the original case because mine doesn't have it's original case but that's just because I couldn't find one locally with the case.

That PS3 back-compatibility issue reminds of something about the PS4 which baffles me intensely to this day: PS4 can play 3D Bluray discs but not audio CDs??? 🤷‍♂

How to collect for PS1? Download an emulator onto your PC, laptop or phone and download some games. It's become so easy that a monkey could do it and costs nothing.

Funnily enough the PlayStation 2 can't play every single PlayStation 1 game it has issues with certain games such as final fantasy anthology and Xenogears

The amount of obscure, hidden gems on the PS1 is wild. I could easily name like 50 from my own collection.

As time has went by, I realized. Playstation 1 is boring as shit.

My PS1 recommendation is Jackie Chan Stunt master. Fun quirky very Jackie Chan adventure feel with the Jackie vs thugs dialogue

...Nintendo backed out of the licensing deal with Sony, because even though they were Draconian with their licenses, they were making sure almost every game under their watch was of good quality.

With the upcoming Sony Playstation deal, Sony undercut those rights.

I've noticed that at least in the case of my PS2 it can not run certain black bottom PS1 games. It's very twitchy. Be aware of that if you are going to try it

Also I’d love a legend of dragoon remake, I like using timing on attacks, it adds a bit of skill instead of just choosing the attack.

The PlayStation was supposed to be a Nintendo console, but then Sony broke the deal and made it their own product 😱. Nintendo was the real winner of 5th generation gaming, same with future ones too!

the PSX is my jam. been collecting for it since it was still sold new in stores (roughly 2003 or so). I always saw it as the successor to the Super Nintendo in terms of stature. One of my favorite games you don't see on many lists - Bushido Blade 2 (damn, wasn't Squaresoft simply on fire during this generation??). I also absolutely love the PSX port of Civ2, but i only ever played it as a portable title, playing it on the PSP, then the vita and now a smartphone - if you like Civilization or 4X games, having this in your pocket will ruin your life. Other non-popular games i loved: 2Xtreme, Cool Boarders 2, Fighting Force 1, Hot Shots Golf 1, Medieval, Soul Blade. Since you have a CRT, know that the PSX is also a lightgun power house.

Even if you have a ps2 or a ps3 you need a psone because it has a screen and it plays them better

Several years ago I got rid of my PS1 console because I thought why do I need it when my PS2 can play those games. Well turns out there are certain models of ps2 that don’t play certain ps1 games very well or just don’t play them at all. (Same goes for Original Xbox). For some reason my copy of Final Fantasy Tactics and Legend of Dragoon had issues running and/or would not even boot up at all… so I bought another ps1 console and never had any other issues. I actually region modded my ps1 so I could buy some of the expensive shooters I’ve always wanted for much cheaper like R-Type Delta, Einhander, and In the Hunt.

Xenogears gets talked about a fair amount but definitely needs to be talked about more.
