As programmers we are always susceptible to the whims of the policies of the engines and they have shown that they are willing to bleed us, so we can't trust them its time to finish all the pendent projects and learn a new engine. But this is business as usual if you decide to use an engine, for them you are just a client, for you they should be just a tool.

Some people say this was planned from the start. That they came out with absolutely comical demands a couple weeks ago in order to make you accept a deal that you otherwise would never accept, the one you have accepted now. That making you simmer a little and then get this "moderate" arrangement was the plan all along.

To which i say, was it worth it? Burning the future prospects like that? That it will never be the first choice of most educators and quite so many studios ever again? Unity will probably have to start shrinking the company within 5 years.

I don't trust Unity one iota going forward. This isn't the end of their shenanigans. In a year or two, maybe three, they'll try to do something incredibly shady once again. I know people have mentioned Godot, but about a week ago someone wrote a great blog "The anatomy of a Godot API call" that really goes over one of the key problems with Godot right now as an engine. I really hope FOSS engines can really mature in the coming years.

wouldn't have said everything is fine before this happened, but Unity's position was clearly illegal.

panicking isn't the proper response. threatening to sue for breach of contract and settling out of court is the proper response.

switching off the unity platform is the proper response.

yes Unity has taken a position to screw its customers for short term profits if you want a product where you won't feel screwed you should go somewhere with other leadership.

I don't know about pledging for united fronts, Unity hadn't even put out its new pricing model to contest in court yet. you don't need to be united, you just need to, at your own pace, go somewhere that makes a product that supports the customer, since you, as a customer want that.

Captiolism and self interest. you don't need to come together to fix this.

if you game developers WANT to come together and make an open source product as a long term solution, that is a solution, but any reaction in the past few weeks before they officially put out their pricing plan, was premature.

aside from informing them that retroactive price increases are infact illegal everywhere in the world. to make sure it doesn't make it into the final pricing model. without need for legal action.

but yeah, they don't like their customers, stop being their customers.

This whole Unity saga played out something like Dune's Golden Path and the Scattering at the end of Chapterhouse where humanity fled the caustic empire of the god emperor in all directions to diversify and spread. Only Unity didn't do this dumbass move with the interests of devs in mind, not like Leto II who did what he did for the diversification and survival of humanity.

To be fair 2.5% was a one time thing when you reach $1 mill in sales then it drops exponentially forward after that.. whereas unreal is 5% of every $1 over $1 million forever.. even if it wasn't a 1 time 2.5% let's put this into perspective... devs are whining about a $25,000 fee after making a million dollars.

I don’t understand the drama, developers get a massive amount of RnD and platform ecosystem for FREE and if you make a profitable product the platform you used deserves a cut. Just sounds like you guys want something for nothing. Is Godot an equal platform to Unity? If so great use FOSS. But you tell me.

I'm just tired of hearing Juan making empty promises. Every time I see Juan on Twitter, rallying people with the slogan of open source, I find him unreliable. He suggests many features that users want, but in reality, it's all talk, and implementation seems distant. He always says, "The engine is yours until the last line of code," but in reality, Juan has the final say in engine features. He gathers more people to develop Godot, and then he starts W4Game company, attracting investments. W4Game's interests are tied to Godot, so if Godot doesn't do well, W4Game can't profit. W4Game has the power to support Godot's development, but in reality, even for simple features, they have to ask developers for money. Is it really a good idea to separate W4Game and Godot when it comes to money? Based on Juan's tweets, I feel he's not a down-to-earth person; he likes to make big promises, and he's really good at marketing! He suggests many features, but how many have actually been implemented? He proposes ideas and uses "open source" as a slogan, saying, "The engine is yours until the last line of code," and gets users to help implement engine features for free. You might think I have some personal issue with Juan from all this, but I don't. Initially, I liked Godot too, but over time, you can understand a person. I don't like Juan's development philosophy, so I left Godot. When he initially proposed his own physics engine, I thought he had ambition but didn't consider practicality, meaning he's not down-to-earth and likes to talk on paper. Now it seems Godot has halted the development of the new physics engine, but has it really stopped? Is Juan truly content? I don't think he is. His current compromise is likely due to being forced by circumstances.. I won't go back to Godot; I prefer the component programming model over the object-oriented node model. Because the component model is more conducive to developing games that adhere to SOLID principles and allow for better game expansion.

I'm just a gamer and no game developer. However, I've followed this Unity Drama very close and especially the vids on this particular channel that I just discovered looking for Unity coverage. I wish the game developers community best of luck. Like others have said: who knows what Unity might change to their business model in the future. Or... other game engines for that matter. The uproar for this outrageous change was truly impressive and I too found it an incredible showcase of what the collective protest voice of the community can accomplish. Stay strong and just. And keep building the beautiful games we all enjoy so much!

What is really weird after I thought about this..if unity was going for a cash grab then they really lost money....I got unity plus for the only reason to not have the unity splash screen and I was under the impression that the free version was nurfed in some way...now since I cannot afford unity pro my only option is
the free version..but now I can hide the spash screen...so basicly they lost money!!! There should be a hobby version...or ultra small indie version for us solo
devs...or em i missing something...is the free version the same as pro now..then why would I buy Pro!!!!

The initial changes were ridiculous, but for where it has now landed.. You're paying 2.5% only if your game becomes a reasonably big success. I'm going to guess that very few developers of this generation have ever tried building a full game engine. 2.5% is a pittance compared to the amount of work you're being spared. Unity is still an incredibly high quality piece of software, and most of you are still getting it for free. The initial moves were very poorly communicated and executed, but that appears to have been largely rectified. Time to dial back the whinge and get on with your projects.

Sorry about my English.

I spent more than 3 months learning Unity 2D (10-12h/day, no breaks).
I was able to do a lot of things with it.
I like it, but I don't like the managers.
Now, I'm using Godot 4.
To be frank, Godot has some shortcomings.
But it's also very interesting.
Let's try it.
