Bit late to the party on this one, but I believe the bass line, along with a couple of other well-known Frankie Goes to Hollywood tracks was provided by Norman Watt-Roy - who was also bass player for Ian Dury (as one of the Blockheads) and latterly with Wilko Johnson (non-musicians will know him more for being the silent executioner in Game of Thrones).

You need the full extended annihilation mix, an underrated band due to media backlash over their lyrics. But we loved it, it was almost a "new wave punk" feel.
We remember the Soviet disunion and the untied (yep) States squaring off balls out, using the world as a fucking chess board to arse fuck each other, trying to use Europe as the condom.
