Stay away from the place, the taxi drivers will rob you blind, no taxi meters in vehicles, rudeness is the default position of bus drivers and most people dealing with tourists. A few nice people but go to Vienna instead, 1 hour away and much nicer.

I lived in Bratislava for a while. Old town is actually really nice, Asburgic like Austria or some towns in Germany, If you go out of the small old town you will find a Soviet quite depressing city. I would recommend to go there but just for a weekend max.

I'm going to be very honest here. Bratislava is not worth a trip on it's own, it's a mediocre excursion from Vienna at best, and even then, I'm being generous.

When were you there? Locals usually leave the cities and towns for holidays in summer. They could also have been in lockdown. Nice to see Bratislava all renovated. It didn't look like that when I lived there as a child. I don't care for strapacky but all of it is great and cheap food for winter. Sitting in a freezing Sydney, I'd love that garlic soup right now!
