My husband and I like to go to Olive Garden and do their endless soup and salad, we get water to drink and with a tip it comes out to $20-$25 for the two of us! And I usually get a bowl of the soup to-go too! Sometimes my husband will order one of their to-go pasta's for $6, so we end up with 2 meals essentially for under $30!

Hi Christine! Thanks so much for the tips! I actually implement some of these. My husband has his own hair. Since Covid I get my hair done about once a year partial highlight and a cut. Thank God my hair grows slow and the gray blends in lol. Also when my mom and I go out to eat we usually go to Texas roadhouse or Longhorn or BJ’s and we get the ribeye and we split it. I live in South Florida where it’s very expensive. We would love to move however not quite sure how to handle blended family issues so definitely going have to think that one through which is something we have been exploring.

I think random dinner night is wonderful. My kids, not so much. I told them we are eating up stuff from the fridge tonight and they aren’t happy. But we have to, or the leftovers will go to waste. Also, thank you for advocating for generous tipping. 20-25 % is minimum. The restaurant workers work hard, it’s not their fault the system stinks, they deserve fair compensation. Also, don’t forget to leave a tip for the room cleaners at hotels.

Buying online and doing store pick up at places like Walmart has massively cut down our budget because it forces you to look at your total cost and you don’t see impulse buys in the store. I can cut the week’s spending down in half just doing that alone.

I save money buy thrifting. There is a store in my area that has color coded tags on clothes every week. One color is .98 and the other color is half off. On Tuesday, Seniors get 30% off of the other colors. I dont need a whole lot of stuff now that I am retired, but I do help out with clothing my grandkids. I shop on Tuesday and my plan is to look for the .98 clothing first. I will buy next size up and save in a box. That way the kids always have clothes when they need them. Things are getting crazy expensive EVEN AT the Thrift Stores so you need to take the time to really LOOK for those bargains. I have that time now, but not as much money.

re: saving all your bonuses and cash gifts, if i have a windfall i like to save most of it, like 80% and then use the other 20% for frivolity. that way I get to be responsible and save, AND still feel like I'm enjoying a little treat. that 20% is not a huge deal and it satisfies the guy in me that wants to go spend all my new money immediately

Here in Tennessee, one can get a small amount (8 - 12 ounces) of country ham pieces, sometimes labeled as seasoning meat. This adds great flavor to a pot of beans. I find any pork goes well with beans

Moving to a cheaper area doesn't really work where i live (Israel). We wanted to just move to a cheaper area in our town. Since we own our home it wouldn't have saved us a lot and yhe school that belongs to our neighborhood is the best over here

Doing a No Spend was life changing for me. I saw how addicted I was to buying things. The most I've done is about 3 days in a row, but I plan to do at least two days a week. The more you don't spend the easier it gets. I may do a No Spend November. Some people do no spend for a year. Amazing. Having self discipline is so empowering.

My biggest money saver is just learn how to cook those steaks at home. They are sooo much better if you know how to cook them. All you really need is your cast iron.

I taught myself to shave the dog, save me £40 every 5 weeks, I get my salmon when on yellow stickers, I bulk buy tins when on offer, I scored some heinz beans tins and tomato soup for 40p a tins got 24 of each and got an extra 5% off that is 12 soup/cheese diners for the next 3 months (once a week). I am doing the meal plan in reverse right now as I need to empty both freezers (I learned that from you ) so I am not going to spend much in the next 6 weeks

Pulling our 3 kids from everything feels tough! My husband now works remotely. We figure we could almost eliminate our mortgage. 🎉 Might just be worth it for the opportunity cost. 🤔

I love these “save money tips” that I don’t have enough money to NOT follow. “Space out your haircuts!” I’ve never paid for a haircut in my entire life. “We only spent $40 on a restaurant meal!” I think I went to one sit down restaurant in the last year and someone else treated me. 🥲

The upfront costs of moving to a new area will put you deeper in debt unless you can find a job with a company willing to cover relocation costs. And the best-paying jobs tend to be near large cities where the cost of living is higher. I see what you're getting at with the recommendation, but I'm not sure how feasible it is for the average American family.
