When most people say powerful they think spells or attacks. I think skills. I like to take a cleric or rogue dip for more skills and expertise. I imagine in most games of dnd must not be very social or academic focused. A wizard with a rogue level to get Arcana expertise is awesome. I had a wizard who was sort of an archaeologist and took a level of rogue to bypass traps on his expeditions as he hired the party to help him and the rogue died partway and they had nothing to help and struggled to make it out so he vowed to never be helpless again. A dip in cleric is great after a resurrection or planar travel.

I wonder whether it's possible to somehow create a Wild Shape/Beastmaster/Clockwork/Animate Dead/Astral Self multiclass combo, so your character is literally five bears:
You're a bear, you tamed a pet bear, you built a robot bear, you reanimated a zombie bear, and you control a spirit bear.

I gotta go up and defend a bit of Monk / Spellcaster Classes in here.

Although not commonly optimal, or the first thing you think up, Monks do benefit from having those early level spells in their arsenal. I think up to 3rd Level spells are very useful, and i dont mean, Cleric or Druid only:

Monk/Wizard:

A 22 AC Way of Mercy Bladesinger, Hasted, with three attacks, FoB, plus reaction Shield and Mirror Image? Count me in.

Monk/Sorcerer

Astral Self/Draconic Soul whose Soul Wings (shaped like hands of course) Reach Attacks, plus hardier AC than usual, and Twinned Haste or Slow? Woohooo

(shoutout to Divine Soul/Way of Mercy punchy healer)

Monk/Bard

Valor or Swords Bard with Kensei Monk makes a quite effective Archer and long ranged combatant, focusing on battle control and expert movement around the field

Monk/Warlock

One would usually say Hexblade/Kensei Monk, but... I actually believe that an Undead Warlock/ Way of Death Monk makes a quite scary Character (literally). Armor of Shadows + Pact of the Blade + Eldritch Smite + Area Fear Effect + Immortality (if you have Ki Points to spare)... imagine fighting an enemy that will not drop no matter how many meteors you drop on it while every attack seems to damage you more and more. Damn. I wanna play that

I took the suggestion of ranger/rogue, gloomstalker/arcane trickster from this channel. I've never felt so powerful with a character. The consistent damage output vs the rest of my group is insane! Love this mash-up!! My characters ambition is to make his own ranger conclave (gloomstalker has never been created before in my dms homebrew). I mixed the two subclasses together and call it the Umbral Anarchist 🤘

I see your D ranking for Druid/wizard and I offer up my Circle of Stars Druid with a 2-level dip in Divination Wizard. Portent is the perfect addition to the stars Druid’s divination abilities, and it’s nice to grab the wizard’s first level utility spells and cantrips. It works thematically with my Druid’s back story of growing up in a university environment with astronomy and biology professors for parents.

I love shoving a level of Sorcerer into a character.

Is it good? Meh. Do I like being able to keep my one (1) set of Traveler's Clothes clean with Prestidigitation while out on the road? Absolutely.

I probably could get what I want from Magic Initiate, but then you're foregoing ASIs, and you can't cast your level 1 spell with spell slots, and it just--bleh. Doesn't feel right. Not in the same way bribing your DM with some catastrophic, magic-infusing character development does. 😊

Personally I think classes are stupid, but as archetype roles they work in a party. What I feel is that everyone should be allowed to learn whatever and that mix will over time turn you into the arch type you create for yourself. Pick up the skills you would like and learn how to fight, use magic and sneak when needed instead of locking into a class that just isn't perfect at all. Within such a system you would be a fighter if your skills around fighting was all good enough or had reached a certain level and the same thing would be true for the others too. You wouldn't pick a class to become a mage, you learned magic and mastered spells to earn the right to call yourself a mage.

That type of system is something I could really get behind and have a lot of fun with and just to say it, I usually get bored with the clases and starts to puck cross class skills just to get some of the abilities that anyone would be stupid to not learn. And that just don't work with D&D, it did work to a degree in 2nd AdD, but not any more.

There are on system that several litrpg books uses as the background and there the skills are what's important and you can grow your skills and everything else too through use and training. A bit like cultivation actually.

The more I learn about the changes done the D&D over the last few versions, the less I like it. So I went looking for something better.

I brainstormed a crazy build a while ago now after one of these videos, I think it was the monk one. Its a bubgear with 6 levels in Kensei monk, 5 levels in any cleric (chose peace), 2 levels of spores druid, 3 levels of battlemaster, and 4 levels of gloom stalker. You can roll a LOT of dice on that first round

One of my favorite quirky builds if you have high enough stats to work it at points (like if rolled stats) is the Artificer (Battlesmith or UA's forge adept) to lv 4 for INT to attack with a magic weapon, and 16 levels of Ranger (I usually use horizon walker, but many work well there) or any of the arcane fighter / rogue builds which prioritize INT (and Soul Knife somehow since their psychic blades feature specifically calls them magic weapons, which qualifies them even without an infusion), allowing you to be at least overall more SAD based for the builds.

2 palladyn 1 Hexblade x swords Bard. Up to 9 lvls spells, two attacks, single ability score, no need for dex except for str. Grab staff of power cause you can as warlock 1, polearm master and shield. It's the most powerful muliticlass combo.

Not sure if it is the most powerful but I have a lot of fun with my Rogue/Barbarian. You become a Grapple monster with almost no effort, sneak attack can be used with a strength-based attack as long as it is with a finesse weapon, and Extra Attack is great on any Rogue. (In my case, I started as mostly Barbarian but intend to build toward more and more Rogue until it's more Barbarian than Rogue. Currently shooting for Barbarian 7/Rogue 13 as the end point)

For our high-level just-for-fun campaign (to fill in for the regular campaign when our DM needs a break or has to miss) I started with a Dwarf 14th Sorcadin who's now 17th -- 6th/Paladin (vengeance) and the rest Sorcerer (divine soul). So so so much fun. Low-level spell slots go to smiting. Sorcerer spells get upcast for AOE and control. A quickened Booming Blade gives a third attack whenever I have no other need for my Bonus Action. Dwarven Fortitude lets me use a Hit Die in combat -- which triggers the Bloodwell Vial ability to regain 5 sorcery points. Metamagic Adept gives more sorcery points & metamagic options to make up for the paladin levels. This build definitely feels on par with the single-class characters in the party.

When I found out that spellcasters in dnd share spell slots the first thing that came to my mind is that every caster needs one level of wizard. You can learn utility spells (misty step, darkness etc) from scrolls and switch to the ones you currently need at will! With just a one level you can combine Sorcerer's destructive might with wizards versatility!

I think armorer 3/bladesinger 6+ is also an interesting, if unintuitive gishy multiclass option at mid-high levels. The guardian armor provides some interesting benefits as tank wizard while the infiltrator armor can be combined with sharpshooter to allow for a competitive gish character (blade song does not stop on one handed range attacks). Although you do not get the steel defender, in my opinion, by the time you get access to the defender in actual play (level 7), it will die quickly, and scale poorly. And, with armorer, if you run out of bladesong you can simply don some heavy armor to boost your ac. Armorer 5/wizard 15 is also a gish build with extra attack, heavy armor, and 9th-level spell slots so bears consideration in a 20th level oneshot (though probably not outside of that). Also of note: By taking returning weapon using it on a javelin and sharpshooter, you can also play your battlesmith/bladesmith (or battlesmith/wizard) as a ranged gish).

I went forge domain first wizard the rest. I have access to heat metal, some utility spells, and healing as a wizard with the ability to use heavy armour and give a +1 to my AC as a wizard. My thought was that wizards are squishy and need some support to give an escape plan if needed. I have shield with a high AC. My casting is only back one level, but I can use that to up cast things on the cleric list. I am not sure when I would take a few more levels of cleric if at all.

My most powerful multiclass was 8 Vengeance Paladin/12 Aberrant Mind Sorcerer. Shadow Blade deals MASSIVE amounts of psychic damage, and a quickened Dissonant Whispers makes it possible to get a triple melee strike on an enemy with the AoO from a failed save against Dissonant Whispers. And that's before stacking on any smites. In two turns, my sorcadin bloodied an Ancient wind dragon. Solo. While my allies were recovering from near death. With a 7th level spells slot, every attack was dealing 5d8 psychic damage. And even at 3rd level slot, you're getting 3d8 per attack. Quickening Mirror Image makes the sorcadin harder to hit, While a quickened Fire Shield makes enemies hitting the Paladin a painful experience.

Idk i think 5 or 6 lvls pally then 6 or 7 lvls war cleric is very good havnt played it in actual DND yet but have in BG3 and its super strong, you have spirit guardians you have higher lvl spell slots than a pally so you hit way harder and you can use bonus action to attack again. makes a supers trong melee cleric/pally, Drop charisma as much as you can and go str and wis imo, Obviously it'll be harder to build in DND than bg3 kuz of the ability score reqs but I think it could be super strong way higher than C In alot of ways i think its stronger than Pally/sorc kuz you get spirit guardians which really boosts pally passive dmg.

if you subclass alchemist into life cleric you can have some of the fattest heals in town, you'll have to put 5 levels into alchemist to get the buffed healing spells but a level 1 healing word healing a minimum of 17 hitpoints is huge while also having access to mass healing word at later levels and also cure wounds. its only one other build for it but it's worth mentioning.

I'd have to say out of all the characters I've played, my absolute favorite is the Circle of Stars Druid multiclassed with a few levels in Life Cleric. The heals along with the tankiness is just.. Crazy strong. It may not do too much in combat besides a few cantrips or guiding bolt, but the healing is insane!

I play a level 19 character that is 4 levels of Hexblade Warlock and 15 levels of Lore Bard. I think I might have done one too many level in Warlock, but in general I really love this build. I picked up Pact of the Chain for level 3 Warlock and have an Imp familiar. For roleplaying aspects, having a smart-mouthed devil as a familiar has worked tremendously for in-game roleplaying.

At level 19, so much of my work is doing support or casting big encounter changing spells like Force Cage, Wall of Force, Counterspell and so forth, that even though I have a fireball via Magical Secrets, on the balance I do way more damage using Eldritch Blast. With Hex, Hexblade's Curse, I can often hit for ~90 points of damage just using Eldritch Blast, which on the balance does more damage than Fireball and doesn't suck up a spell slot.

If you want STR monk play barbarian with tavern brawler, fighting initiate: unarmed fighting. It takes a full action to escape a grapple which is a good way to eat up action enemy action economy, plus grappled creatures count as improvised weapons with which your proficient with. Take crusher later on for a poor man’s stunning strike and you are complete
