Richard Burton was suave, debonair, talented and intelligent. He is everything lacking in the contemporary actor.

He was interesting without the liquor, either in him or in you. Now imagine liquor in both. By all accounts, a man painfully missed the minute he was gone, and for long after. By the way, there's gotta be something in that area of Wales that produces greatness, but I failed to see it when I drove through the UK all those years ago. That village he mentions is near a larger town called Port Talbot in South Wales, off the M4, and there's seemingly nothing remarkable about it other than being a working class town. And yet Port Talbot and its immediate environs produced great actors like Burton, Anthony Hopkins, and Michael Sheen, while the great 20th century poet (and Burton's friend) Dylan Thomas was up the M4 a bit in Swansea. Something in the water in South Wales. Maybe it's the coal dust. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There’s something tragic yet beautiful about this man. He was not destined to be an actor. The twelfth child of an impoverished and violent coal miner, he lost his mother when he was two years old. He spoke no English up to the age of 10 and was then taken in by a schoolmaster who put him on the path to Oxford University and, after trying to find his place in life, he became one of the most accomplished actors of his generation.

Most actors today are destined to be actors (born either middle class or higher, took acting lessons when they were children, went to a drama school, etc.) but Richard Burton was not destined to have a career in acting. He could’ve been a miner like the men of his family, but he didn’t. He had a story, something most actors today don’t have 😢

My ansectors Jon and George came to America in 1820 and became Foreman of a coalmine in Plymouth Pa. Many ansectors died at the lanseshire mining disaster in Wales. And on Friday the 13th my Great, Great Grandfather went down into a mine collapse to try and rescue 12 men. Sadly all 13 perished. My great grandfather moved to Newark to perdue different work eventually to spare his children of the mines. But my whole Family was and are Pro Union blue collar workers.

Humble??!! First of all, so-called "Richard Burton" not his real name. I think it's a disgrace and shows complete disrespect of one's heritage to change their birth name, unless when a woman gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her last name, that shows no respect to her husband. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the name "Richard Walter Jenkins Jr"! The change was probably made as a result of pressure from a greedy Business Manager and or Studio, with respect to perceived anticipation of greater recognition and subsequent monetary gain?!

Its very interesting the contrast between Burton and Michael Parkinson. Both had fathers who were miners, but whilst Burton talks up the life of a miner, Parkinson’s dad took him down a mine as a kid to show him how terrible it was. I tend to think Parkinson’s father was right - sounded appalling
