"Hogetara" is a Japanese dialect that means "stupid, stupid" or "crazy".
In other words, the lyrics say, "There are many stupid people in the world. There are also many stupid samurai."
This song is just like Dororo's soul. Gracefully and childish. ❤

ОтветитьFor anyone curious: I wrote my 3rd year midterm paper for my class on Japanese Arts and Media at Hokkaido University on the differences between the 1969 and 2019 versions of the Dororo anime, so I did a lot of research into this series lmao
Based on quite a few Japanese sources, the first manga draft of Dororo as written by Tezuka was closer to the 2019 version that we now have. It was very bloody and violent with a lot of adult themes. But because manga and this particular anime adaptation was made in the late 60s, when anime was primarily aimed at boys in elementary and middle school, he had to make a lot of changes to the story before this version could be aired. So the 1969 anime adaptation was reduced to more of a fun samurai adventure with Hyakkimaru as a cool hero protagonist who kicks evil guy butt by defeating demons, and Dororo accompanies him for the comic relief - a mischievous and funny little boy who other little boys could relate to. Much of the original storyline was kept the same, but there are certain elements and visuals that Tezuka was forced to change to make it age appropriate. Like Mio's assault is never mentioned in this anime version, let alone shown directly on screen like it was in the 2019 version, and her death is only mentioned in a flashback where we don't see her dead body, just a temple in flames; also one opening sequence has Dororo jumping across the roofs of buildings, when the original was supposed to be Dororo prancing through a battlefield of corpses (or heads on spikes, I can't remember which, but it was certainly a violent visual).
In short, Dororo at its core is a very dark series about demons, morality and the very real historical horrors of the Sengoku period, one of Japan's bloodiest eras, but back in the 60s Tezuka was forced to tone it down to make it more appealing to his young audience, creating this fun and cool samurai adventure where there's a clear divide between the "goodies", Hyakkimaru and Dororo, and the "baddies", stupid samurai and demons. Nowadays, when anime and manga isn't just a children's medium anymore, it's much safer, for lack of a better term, to revive the series and stay more loyal to the darker themes that Tezuka originally intended to show through this series, such as human morality and the horrors of war.
