I really enjoy hearing about the Shinsengumi. My 5 or 6 times great grandfather was Okita Soji.

I bet left handed swordsmen had a huge advantage over right handed people.

I believe that the Shinsengumi themselves made it pretty clear who they believed were the 3 strongest and left it right there for future generations to read and understand the order of the strongest members.
Strongest, Captain of the 1st Squad, Okita Soji.
Second strongest, Captain of the 2nd Squad Nagakura Shinpachi. ( I'm sorry but if I didn't accept the order of strength and skill of it's 3 strongest members clearly stated by it's members by the Squad numbers these 3 were the captains of I'm not sure Nagakura Shinpachi would make top 3 in my list, considering he is one of the chief sources of information about the Shinsemgumi in the first place, biased much?)
Third strongest, Captain of the 3rd Squad Saito Hajime

Leaving out of this list talented swordsmen the likes of Hijikata Toshizo or Yamanami Keisuke, I mean seriously he trained under Chiba Shusaku Narimasa, the founder of the Hokushin Itto-ryu as well as Okita Soji. Although he also missed out on the famed Ikedaya incident in 1864. But how about Ito Kashitaro? They had to get him drunk before he was assassinated on the way home in front of the gate of Honko-ji Temple on Abura-no-koji Street by several Shinsengumi. He wasn't some no name farmer turned bushi, he'd learned Shindo-Munen ryu under Kenshiro Kaneko as well as Ito Hokushin-itto ryu under Seiichi Ito who adopted him. He was born as the first son of Senemon Tadaaki Suzuki who was Gometsuke of the Shizuku Domain in Hitachi Province, but he was disposessed. Harada Sanosuke? He was known as a spear master of Taneda-ryu (or Hozoin-ryu Sojutsu School of spearmanship). Harada participated in all major fights of Shinsengumi. Heck, Sannan Keisuke for that matter! He challenged other schools of Tennenrishinryu Swordplay Shieikan of Isami Kondo and defeated the opposing Kondo.

Surprising how many actual facts were included in the Rurouni Kenshin anime (and the Kyoto storyline)! Including the fact that Okita Soji died of TB. Having kids watch those shows is kinda like giving them a history lesson! 😁

Edit: I wanna know more about the Ikedaya incident. Is that the one where Shinsengumi took out the rebels in an inn who were planning on burning the city? If so, according to the anime version, Saito was a part of it. 🤔

The precursor was Roshigumi and Kiyokawa Hachiro when he wasn't drunk may have been better than anyone in Shinsengumi
