I have a tote like yours that I layered leaves and topsoil in then I caught a few hundred worms by raking through leaves in my woods. I put all the worms in my tote. Can I just add another tote with the holes drilled in the bottom and sides and put the wet newspaper in the top one? I’ve been feeding them blended oatmeal, banana peels, etc. thanks in advance. I think you are really cool and inspiring. 😊

Sadly I am confused.

1. How many bins are we supposed to keep stacking?
2. When can I stop stacking or unstack and use them?
3. What screen do you use to filter the castings and it's there a separate video for that?

We have totes that I've just been using to catch rain, do I'm planning to use those ASAP. Please let me know the answers, and hopefully no other questions will arise.

Also I think you're work bin only had two totes so that's another thing I'm confused about as far as "stacking" goes.

THANK YOU!!!

As a food source for the worms, can finished compost be used?

I collect food waste curbside and compost this in an outdoor bin. I have plenty of finished compost to feed the worms if this is something I can do...

I really need to start another bin ,sadly when I had 2 surgies in a row and was laid up for a year, sadly they died...so better now ,I need to try again, I think it will be important now especially, having a cattlepanrl greenhouse built ,eo i can expand my garden and get my seed starting going , in Florida will help my tender plants ,N.central it does get freezes here, so this will help

I’ve been debating whether to try something like this as a homeschool project with my kids this year, so this was a very helpful breakdown.

I'm new to all this but I want to give vermicomposting a try. It seems like this is obvious, but I can't wrap my brain around this: what is the purpose of stacking bins on top of each other? In the first bin is where the worms will go with their bedding, but then, when I stack the second or even subsequent bins, would I also put food scraps, newspaper shred and coco coir in them? Then what happens to the first bin? I'm just trying to understand the process.

I am so scared to do stuff like this. Worm bins, composting, compost teas, etc. Anything involving stuff rotting.
Last July I came down with something called burning mouth syndrome. It happened right after I started gardening and handling all the soil and messing with diseased plants. I’ve developed this obsession with cleanliness since this happened otherwise I would probably be jumping right on the worm bin and composting wagon.
I’m just afraid the bacteria or something may get on my food and infecting my mouth somehow making my mouth feel worse. After 9 mths of experimenting with supplements and prescriptions from my doctors, fish oil pills are the only thing I’ve found that makes my mouth pain bearable. It can be pretty intense, especially during a flare up.

Anyway, I’m still confused at how to even use compost. I thought it was fertilizer, but I guess not? And the worm bin is compost? It fertilizes the food? Or it just makes it grow better and you still need to use a separate fertilizer? so confused

I have a question for you. I notice you and others recommend using newspaper a lot. Newspaper contains high levels of lead in it. This is safe to be adding to our composts and worm bins? It won’t leech into our food? Just curious, guess that’s another one of my fears. Haha
