well now you're just going to have to make time for their 1972 documentary "echoes: live at pompeii" ("echoes" is a two-part studio track from 1971 album "meddle"). you'll hear the birth of riffs and motifs that got refined and supercharged for "dark side". floyd started out as a novelty psychedelic band that "dark side" transformed into concept album progressive art-rock.

The lunatic in the song "Brain Damage" is a loose reference to the band's former leader, Syd Barrett. Syd suffered from Schizophrenia exacerbated by drug use. Their album "Wish You Were Here" expands on the band's relationship with Barrett.

Weird synchronicity or coincidence, this album has been on my mind the past few days.

The greatest thing about this band is how they let the music be the sole thing to market them to the public. If you look at pics of the band, they really had no good looking members between the four of them (The closest one that could've been put out there as a marketable face would've been their guitarist David Gilmour, but then again he did moonlight as a model in Paris about a year or two before getting into rock and roll).

The Great Gig in the Sky: her name is Clare Tory. She was a 25 year old session vocalist hired by the band for three hours. She came into the studio did two and half completely improvised takes and ascended into immortality.

Yes, please, more. It would be very tough to top Dark Side of the Moon, so you shouldn't even try. Move on to something completely, totally different for your next album reaction.

This album will still be listened to in hundreds of years like we listen to Classical music today. The beginning of Us and Them where you felt like someone died is actually a revitalised piece of music from earlier in their career. The band were working with the director Michelangelo Antonioni on his film Zabriskie Point and he wanted some music to play over a scene of violence. Rick Wright came up with that music as a contrast but Antonioni rejected it as being too sad and reminding him of church. It remains a beautiful piece of music though.

Welcome to Pink Floyds universe 🙂 . It's a life time experience and more than just music . I highly suggest you watch a live performance such as the Pulse concert . David Gilmour plugs his soul into his amplifier . Dark Side is basically your whole life journey , emotions and death exposed in an album . The rabbit hole is deep .
P.s...as you mentioned take a look at the lyrics , all becomes clear and very impactful .

you really opened a rabbit hole with this band, the look on your face was enough to see you will probably get hooked.... and guess what you did the right thing not focusing on lycrics, but not only will those blow your mind, wait till you see one of their live stage shows! hahahahaha

I am so glad that you are listening to the entire album. I don't know if it's still the case but for the longest time many, especially music critics, considered this the best album in history. Pink Floyd is definitely one group you want to listen to on your headphones. The sound mixing is very important and so a live performance doesn't yield the same effect. Alone and with our headsets on is the way this music was designed to be heard. If on the other hand you want to hear a live performance that stands out, try anything from Jethro Tull which is of the same period. Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, and the Moody Blues is why we oldsters are so snobbish about our music. By the way the guy in charge of sound mixing started his own band and they have many albums, that band is called The Alan Parsons Project.

Not sure how a saxophone can be mistaken for a trumpet, but I guess it's because neither of them is used much in today's music anymore. And that was really dirty sax particularly in Money.

Smoking weed, listening to DS of the Moon while watching The Wizard of Oz, on mute, is the best recommended way to go. You'll need to know the exact moment to start playing the album to the start of the movie. lol

This is an album from when music was hard to make. Albums were often art. Nowadays most music is disposable - still good but easily made and disposable. Dark Side is like Pet Sounds and Sgt Pepper, all albums that changed the art.

Other bands of the period you should listen to would be "The Doors," "The Animals," "The Fifth Dimension," "Electric Light Orchestra," "Redbone," "Stevie Wonder," "Creedance Clearwater Revival," "Dick Dale and the Del-Tones," "James Brown," "The Righteous Brothers," only to name a few. If you like psychedelic rock try Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, and The Alan Parsons Project.

David Gilmour is a master guitar player. Playing fast is not as cool as playing slow and making every note count. You can just feel the emotion inj every note he plays. Best guitar player ever, in my opinion.
