There were two fundamental restorations, which happened after almost 800 years of Samurai Daimio Leadership.

BUT the Emperor- revered as a sacred LIVING GOD (the concept which has NO parallel in history except may be in case of ancient Egypt where the pharoah was considered as God king) became a great Unifying force. Thus the entire energy of the nation was focused (its not an easy thing to achieve) on selected and chosen areas. The result was that the nation which was backward, isolated-from-the world(until a few decades back) shockingly defeated an Asian power China and an European power--the Russian Empire in a most humiliating way.

The other 6 days of the week you were either hunting to acquire meat to supplement rations and pelts to sell for additional income or you where tending the livestock, feeding the horses, feeding the ciws, milking the cows, feeding the chickens, gathering the eggs, feeding the hogs, watering the crops, weeding the crops, harvesting the crops, ploughing the fields, planting new crops, repairing fence lines, repairing the home and out buildings, soo much stuff that needed doing that waisting time on a daily bath was deemed a waist of time. That all changed during summer where they bathed in the creek every day.
