Sony 28-70mm f2 GM | The Most Versatile Lens Ever?

I’ve been using it (purchased) for over a month now and it pretty much stays on my a7Rv. I have zero negative things to say about this lens and say it’s worth the money if you are serious about delivering nothing but the best Image quality to your clients. The AF doesn’t skip a beat and delivers a new found confidence to saying yes to these run and gun gigs I was typically hesitant to take on before due to using mainly primes. Just get it and don’t look back.

I just got this lens and I already want a second one for my second body! Also I got an 82 step down ring and I can still use all my filters!

this lens is so cheap that i think I should buy it in tens and donate to my friends.

I’m a Canon shooter. Renting our 28-70 f2 next week for a wedding + other fun stuff! Gonna see whether I like it, or the 24-105 f2.8 more. I have rented that lens, and it is a MONSTER!!! Probably my all time favorite lens if this one doesn’t beat it!

I have this and the 24-70 2.8 ii.
The compact size of the 24-70 so im not in a rush to sell it, but yes the 28-70 is unbeatable.

I’ve not used this lens too much yet, but from the few jobs I have used it with I’ve found the following contradictions to what you’ve said in this video:

- distortion at 28mm is bad and very obvious so I’m not sure what you actually looked at that with.
- sharpness is just “average” (by average I mean average for today’s typical lens which is pretty good). I think it’s similar to the f1.8 Sony 35mm and 85mm lenses. Maybe not as sharp as the 35mm which is excellent. The edge sharpness of the 28-70 is definitely a lot worse.
- I’ve found for any moving subjects it misses focus in more shots than a standard 24-70 f2.8 does (in my case the Tamron 28-75).
- bokeh is just a bit meh. Nothing stand out or spectacular. A little bit busy in some scenarios.

Overall I just find this a bit underwhelming especially compared to the canon. Its backgrounds render really nicely. Having said that the weight of the Sony is a big plus. But is it worth the price over something like the Tamron just for an extra stop of light and arguably worse performance in several other areas? I’m not convinced, will give it another go at my next few jobs but the Tamron wins in a lot of key areas for me on what I’ve found so far.
