US helped Australia from suffering low quality Australian car brands by throwing holdens in the bin. It is time for Australian to return the favour by helping US to protect its car manufacturing.

European, american, and other governments in the world shouldnt be scared of chinese EVs. Just delay their zero emission mandate, and people will not rush to buy EVs. Chinese manufacturers are great at making EVs and probably PHEVs, but their ICE cars are not as good as legacy automakers’. European, japanese and american manufacturers are pretty good at making hybrids and PHEVs, and definitely better at making ICE cars. And competition is always good, especially for consumers.

Morally though you are indirectly supporting an authoritarian dictatorship, with undoubtedly bad working conditions very surprising you wouldn’t bring that up seeing it is the primary argument. Do you have cognitive dissonance?

Thank-you so much for expressing this so beautifully. Frankly, I find it ridiculous that Australia, the US and Europe governments weren't clever enough to realise that investing in battery technology and EVs would be a wise course of action ... and now, because of their lack of vision they want to penalise the Chinese for making wise investment decisions? I also agree that it would make no sense to ban these vehicles in Australia - we only gain by having them available here - cleaner air, cheaper transport and greater choice. And as silly as this sounds, thank-you for humanising the Chinese engineers - much of the misinformation out there sets out to do the opposite and demonise the work by others as if it is not possible for individuals from other countries to be innovative, clever or proud of their achievements.

Whether you like it or not, Australia & other western media is controlled or influenced by the US. You will never find such ridiculous call in other countries other than US friendly countries. From here, you do not have to be a genius to understand what is the main motive going on behind the scene. It is never about the national security, it is all about $$ and trade protectionism.

I'm all for restricting and placing tariffs on Chinese vehicles. It's well established that the CCP subsidies their vehicle manufactures, and just about every other industry of consequence, far more heavily than other countries. Yes the Holden, Ford and Toyota debacles here should never have happened and cost us a lot for nothing. In addition to the heavy subsidies given to the Chinese car industry, and just about everything else they make of consequence, they have a less than stella quality control and reliability record. To add to this is the blatant copyright infringements that Chinese companies have been allowed to get away with. This includes the look of vehicles and the technology that goes into them. Another concern is that if they decide to play dirty, which they have a proven track record of if they don't like something, imagine how difficult they could make it to source spare parts for their vehicles? Lastly, with all the technology going into vehicles these days and the OTA updates, I don't trust them to not use this against us in the future.

China’s mines in Africa go online in 2025. They won’t need Aussie iron ore or coal anymore. Australia will probably soon follow the United States’ orders and cut out Chinese products in the name of national security or some other nonsense. I’m not sure how this will pan out because the Australian economy consists of agriculture, fraud, mining and houses. Australia never had any industry to protect — Holden was Australian only in our imagination and ditto for Ford. Interesting times ahead…

this is the most idiotic question I have ever heard! just go into Bunnings or check on what the the last mile delivery vans are in fact delivering, the economy would tank. Same here in NZ. If we stopped exporting our milk, beef, lamb, wine and kiwifruit etc to China, we would be broke, because our traditional so called friendly (western) trading partners are now so tied up with their own protectionism, that we cannot now get a stable export market like we used to.

In the old days, when the British could not compete with the Chinese in trade, they sold opium to China. When the Chinese said no, the British started wars. Too bad they cannot do that now. Because China is a superpower. But the Chinese still want to trade with great products at reasonable prices. The Chinese just don't know how to bully other countries, do they? Even when they are big.

Eu played their card very dirty. European cars have been selling in Chinese for over 30 years and china hasn’t said a word. But when they try to sell in Europe, Europe give them issues. Not very fair. But I’m all about Chinese vehicles Because I have a Gwm cannon alpha and what you get for the money is amazing. But these European and American brands have been milking people and bumping up ridiculous prices and are lazy and just facelift their cars for the past 10+ years. But in the meanwhile Chinese brands have been putting in the time and effort to produce something nice and innovative and they should be awarded for their efforts. So im all for it

I do not care less about vehicle tariffs in Australia! Pointless!
Hot tip child, you are not in a manufacturing business...how many are left in Australia? What sort of manufacturing do we have to drive our highly debt ridden country?
We have so many raw materials here in Australia and we make nothing thanks to government intervention, charges & policies.

China has zero interest in a safe workplace, they pay a pittance and I am barely scratching the surface of very deep problems my grandchildren will face in Australia...
My son works at Ampol, and suddenly Albo, has had to start throwing "borrowed" money at many companies to actually make some product...in Australia!
No industry wants to make products in Australia!
Look how many people are surviving by delivering expensive food on a fucking pushbike for a pittance!
Electricity @ 30 cents per Kw/H plus service fee!

All economies need to move swiftly and as cheaply as possible. Removing this option from your economic development makes you less competitive on the world stage.
Aus also doesn't have much of a local car industry to protect.
