its rly cool to see the process behind everything you do! I have a little bit of PS experience - Instead of handpainting shadows, have you tried masking out your sim and playing with curves? it's a faster way of playing with light+dark than the one you used, but of course it doesnt give the same amount of control you would get doing it manually
