This is a perfect time of year to bring up this topic.
Up until last year, when I knew there were patches of ice on trails, I simply stayed home. This time last year I decided I wanted to expand my hiking season so I bought a red pair of Kahtoola Microspikes & was able to safely cross those patches of ice on trails.
Kahtoola products are designed, engineered & manufactured in Flagstaff, Arizona - AMERICAN made!.
I am so happy with my Microspikes, they are something I should have bought years ago & YES, they have allowed me to SAFELY expand my hiking season.
Incidentally, Kahtoola also manufacturers state-of-the-art GAITERS that are easy peasy to put on when I'm likely to posthole into snow along the trail or when Mother Nature turns nasty & begins to rain; the GAITERS keep my lower legs & socks DRY.

Informative video (especially for this southerner). Speaking of crampons would love your reaction to the just released 14 Peaks doc on Netflix.

Aaron, we one day hiked Whitney a month ago and had Yak Trax. We noted a few people had the micro spikes you highlighted, design wise. I think in future we will go more with the fuller version instead of the Yak 'Trak style of micro spike. Thanks for your videos...they are solid gold and I really enjoy the USEFUL information you provide. Cheers.

Thank you for this video! I have been wondering for a while when it'll be necessary for me to get crampons. Your video elucidated this perfectly. For the future, now I know to do some research on a trail and figure out how much ice I can expect to encounter, and that'll help me choose my gear. Thanks also for mentioning that it's good to bring an ice axe if you expect lots of ice in steep places.

Thanks Aaron all very clear - and entertaining!
I’m in the UK where our snow is often freeze/thaw (particularly nowadays). I’ve only used microspikes when hiking but I’ve found that big balls of snow ice adhere to them and after only three or four steps the microspikes are no use at all. On the other hand, when descending a grassy slope that’s clear of snow but slippery, the microspikes are amazing at giving secure footing. PS I’ve just come across Kahtoola KTS adjustable crampons for hiking boots. They look as though they might not suffer the problem of ice build up. They have one inch spikes and a smooth plate that is said to repel ice blobs from forming! Cost a lot more than their microspikes and weigh more too.
