Have used Windows for more than 3 decades and was more and more irritated of bloatware and the way Win is working, I decided to try different distros as virtual machines. If I could not e.g. change the desktop setting in few minutes and navigate easily and find applications, I dropped the distro and tried a new one. It lasted until I ran into Linux Mint and then I was totally hooked last year.

I noticed that the LMDE is heavier on the virtual machine, but the LMDE do not have updates as often. I have a 10 year old PC with a i5 and it runs smoothly. I'm a mostly a C hobby coder, using Codeblocks making different applications like small relational databases and Raylib for the graphical interface and just having a good time.

My wife's PC, a 10 year old PC with an i3 and is mostly used for office work. She ran W7, because she hates, when something changes like OS upgrades. I installed a new SSD and installed LMDE on her PC. Again everything just worked, even our LAN printer including the scanner. I copied all her work and she have tons of spreadsheets, documents and pictures and hoped for the best. I was surprised, that LMDE runs more smootly than W7 and something like power save just takes a second to sleep or wake and I'm still married! :o)

Debian based stable yes, but latest release of Thunderbird 115.8.1 that was released last week, still not available. Maybe it is now, but still wasn't yesterday. The tarball is the latest, but you can't send files with the tarball from the file manager🤔

Windows user since version 2.x, now I'm trying Mint first Ubuntu based and now LMDE: why? Because only with LMDE I'm able to backup / restore my entire PC (bare metal backup) using the free Veeam Agent for Linux. Oddly Veeam runs perfectly with Mint / Ubuntu only during the backup, but fails every time to fully restore the PC (it works if you restore single files).
So, thank you Debian 🙂

Anecdotal difference: Older laptop had LM21.2 on it. I upgraded to LM21.3 then did a fresh install of LMDE. Boot time for LMDE was much quicker. Generally Jammy (Ubuntu) based distro's or updates (other than the LM21.2 -> 21.3 path) caused that laptop screen corruption when the login screen appeared. Was v. impressed with LMDE on that laptop so keeping it there, but LM 21.3 Cinnamon is my daily driver on my main computer.

Good points! I prefer Debian Testing with Gnome (we have a long story together), but I do like both Linux Mint and Linux mint LMDE (I tried out LMDE when it was new, it was good then as well).
Writing this on a Fedora 39 machine, works ok, but it's back to Debian soon. I like Fedora, I just prefer Debian. Use what you like!

LMDE gives us new exprience.. sometimes when ppl ask you why you're install linux instead of Ms.. Some will answer us because of it's Free, Hobby, etc. But when it comes to work, or serious work, ppl move to ms or mac. Why ? I think it because the appearance and the image that come with LInux -> Free ( min cost ) , Hacking, Hobbies.. etc. Nothing serious..
Hopefully after this.. the Linux Distro Jump to new Era..
Congrat LMDE !! When I'm working with LMDE, honestly it doesn't look like linux yet not like Ms. I feel I'm with no identity.. I love the Distro and hoping for the next future great improvement.. and I Hope LMDE Start to build his own character or Identity..

LMDE is a very good debian distro for people who want to use debian

But Linux Mint must continue to be based on Ubuntu cuz of the fact that they make a better Ubuntu distro than the actual Ubuntu itself

I just found this channel a few days ago on the homelab content which I'm just starting with. I like Debian and Mint. I used Mint for quite a while myself and have had my parents on Mint for a long time. I decided to move away from Mint after some annoyances and ended up on Devuan(Debian without Systemd). I've been on Devuan for several years now and it's been very stable. I'm a bit overdue to upgrade as a result and have run into some issues as a result. Getting to the point, I tried the newest Devuan, MX Linux, and LMDE and I was having weird issues with video playback including sound issues and even freezing. I didn't have that on older versions. I don't remember why I had the idea to try the Ubuntu-based version of Mint, but I did, and it seems to be working so far, though I still need to do some testing. It was one of those things that didn't seem worth troubleshooting when I could distro hop, and I was considering quite a few, including OpenSUSE which I mention because that was where I got my start. But it seems to be something with the recent version of Debian and my hardware. I guess Ubuntu is doing something different that fixes that. But that shows that it's great to have both versions, and I've enjoyed using LMDE on a different machine. I was really surprised to have the issues I did, but that's how it goes sometimes.

Maybe you can answer this; why does the latest upgrade disable our laptop sound cards, and why does Mint not address this with a fix or a rollback, or even a setting tab in the system settings? It's very irritating having to use a Bluetooth speaker, instead of our previously fine sound apps. Not all users are tech whizzes.

I've come to loath Ubuntu. I am extremely happy with LMDE. All my computers are now LMDE 6. All of the Mint icing on the Debian cake.

I was originally worried that the versions of the software would be horribly out of date. This turned out to be a non-issue for me. The versions are up-to-date or very close to it. Highly recommend.

I was interested in LMDE when I first heard about it. Mint is my favourite distro because of my workflow preferences , but when I wanted a second distro on a 2nd drive, using another cinnamon edition really made the grub menu confusing. So I put LMDE on the 2nd drive mainly just to differentiate in grub at first. Worked like a charm. Great distro in it's own right. Definitely a keeper. 👍

Given the scheduled demise of support for W10, I'm looking for a replacement OS for W10.

I have an Intel atom based tablet, an old Lynx 1010b, running on fully updated W10. I use this together with the proprietry keyboard as a mini laptop. It is still going strong after 9 years and I would like to keep using it rather than add it to the electronic waste pile. I suspect that an upgrade to W11 would be beyond the machines capability.

But there is a limitation on use. Whilst the processor is 64 bit, the software (And possibly some of the hardware) has been configured so that it will only run 32 bit OSes.

Consequently, the current mainstream Linux distros cannot be run. I tried standard Mint Mate, and despite completely wiping the on-board storage, it wouldn't load, saying it needed 16.9 GB of room and only 16GB was available. I presume that report is an error related to a 64 bit OS trying to read a 32 bit system? Also, the on-board memory is only 2GB.

With the above in mind I was thinking of using Mint LMDE, which is 32 bit.

I'd be interested to learn whether anybody has tried using Mint LMDE on this type of tablet (Or similar) and what results were.

MT.

I would probably use LMDE if they could add a driver app. Some drivers are easy install and some are a PITA without it. Even in the standard LM, if you want to install a driver newer than what is offered, you can run into issues with keystores (if I'm remembering the term correctly, probably not).

All I got was a black screen of LinuxMint and then HyperV said it died.
Do Linux developers even test their software? So I installed the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS instead which is packaged with HyperV.
