If i don't have alot of a material, or it's just not worth sorting, I just throw it all in with Iron/Steel shred. You add to the weight with all that misc stuff and they can sort it haha

On plug ends, hold the base with large plyers, grip the brass with side cuts down low, pry sideways. The brass pulls out, 90% of the time it brings out the copper with it. 5 seconds per plug.

@thubprint - a little tip for you regarding the plug sockets, place them into your vice and simply ply the brass pieces out using pliars and you will find it very easy and also the existing copper wire comes out attached to them aswell. It’s very easy and very quick to do 👍🏻👌

time:reward is limited massively by scrap yards'/middleman/wholesale buyers margins - the greatest scam that ever lived is "grades". 90% of the work/effort/access/discovery is done by the scrapper and he get's 10% of the money.
join with other ground level ppl to generate/store enough volume to jump as many middlemen as possible on the way to the final source or re-use, there's so much value available in that so be creative because together with others your material is worth more than alone

There people that will take the donation for computers but I don't think that it's worth it. In fact I think I just really really bad that people do that. Because it's a lot of rare computers out there that are being cannibalized for stupid s shit like copper wire when there really isn't a lot in it you'll never get what you want and a lot of times the computers worth more than the copper.

I dont make plug soup to soften them. I hold them in vice grips the pull the prongs out. I don't always get the copper strands out but I get the brass.

I dont keep the iron because I don't have enough room to keep it to make enough. My yard is too far away to just bring small loads. Right now, I only keep copper, brass stainless, and cast aluminum.

Plug ends: get one regular set of pliers, and one pair of electrician pliers, grab the whole plug with regular pliers, twist off the flat and ground prongs..... done. Why all the fuss about softening the c rubber? The prongs pop (twist) right off.

Like you said, it depends what your scrapyard pays. My yard specializes in escrap. I get the same for laptops complete as I do for #2 copper. They're gold (well, copper) to me. Part of this is a different method of collecting and sorting scrap. I've got containers that don't get a lot in them. They can sit there for a year before I bring them into the yard. I bring brass once a year. Something else I get good money for is batteries. Lead acid or lithium ion get the same money for me. I also do this stuff for fun and my trip to the scrapyard is always in combination with something else that I have to drive by the scrapyard to get to anyways. So I'm not wasting a trip.

You dont soften up plugs or wires. You put them into barrel with used motor oil for instance, then get it hot enough so PVC just melts off the wires and the plugs, then scoop them out. You can then siphon oil to another barrel, drain the PVC out to get oil off and if you do this with colors, some places are interested to buy the PVC it self to make recycled PVC to mix in with virgin material, so that could be potential way to do it. Just need to make sure there is no contamination from other plastics and depending who you sell it to they might want you to clean it, but that is just soap and water.

laptops are terrible even for those of us who can fix computers. too much integration and few standard components. even the processors are not worth very much if they are more than a few years old. with an older chip you would be hard pressed finding a still working mobo that works with it. at some point it is cheaper to buy a newer mobo/chip than to get something old to work again. even desktops get problematic when they are more than a few years old. of course if its really old, you are in vintage territory and value goes up again.

The way to make money from the laptops is not to do with any of the physical components. It's by salvaging the Windows License Keys on the COA stickers. Those keys will work for Windows 10 & 11, so you sell them for 10 bucks each.
