I tend to have a love/hate relationship with Tabata. I guess the idea was to go flat out on each 20 second burst, but if someone truly went flat out, after 3 or 4 exercises they would be slowing down and therefore need more rest to go flat out again...or we don't go flat out and it becomes like a normal HIIT session. I think it only really works if you go "hard" and use different exercises each time. I once tried a Tabata format with court sprints and it just didn't work. By the fourth set I was slowing already as 10 seconds just isn't enough rest...I do find 10 seconds rest works with metabolic stress training, but there are different exercises in the circuit, and as I say it's just "go hard" rather than "flat out" which more than does the job!
