How do I stop files from going to OneDrive 2024

If you do this the folder ''Documents'' does not appear anymore in windows and you still have to use OneDrive since all your documetns are stored there.

My plan is to unlink it from my desktop, does it delete or remove any files?

Can you tell me how to stop files going FROM onedrive? I just got a new computer and would like to choose which files I want transferred and I need to transfer those files manually. My old computer had two drives while my new one has one drive so I've gotta relocate stuff. I woke up this morning and found one drive downloaded everything it could overnight without my permission to my new computer and it didn't quite know how to handle moving files from two drives to one so now my brand new computer is a mess of shortcuts that go nowhere and junk files I don't want. Had to do a factory reset to fix it and would like to know what to do before setting it up again.

I need help. I got a new computer and while I was setting it up I think I accidentally synced it with my old one which is the one I mostly use for school, and it’s deleting important stuff on it on its own because I deleted it on my new computer. Does anyone here know how to fix this?

Thank you. I've been using Microsoft products since the mid-1980s, and am getting more and more disgusted with how they operate. I was quite happy with my cloud storage outside of Onedrive. Now the default settings on my new Win11 computer send them to Onedrive. This MS practice of hijacking my files should be stopped. It's one more reason for users not to trust MS. Perhaps some state attorneys general will take up the cause.

I'd removed the Docs/Pictures/Desktop from backup and yet it kept syncing them, even though when I checked the options again they remained turned off. Constant notifications about my 5gb being full and suggestions to buy more space (although the idea of automatically backing up so many files to 5gb sounds ridiculous in itself). Finally unlinking the account seems to have worked, thanks for the tip. Feels like they're making this as difficult as possible.

Yeah I'm able to figure this out for myself
My Onedrive folder is full at 101% or 5 GB
I can't make any changes, says it's "unfortunate but wasn't able to make any changes" or the select folder screen just stays loading
I just wanted to clear up some space for my hotmail account but now im seriously fucked
Of course paying monthly is not an option
I feel like I'm being hijacked and the only option is paying, out fucking rageous
My only option is tell everyone I've stopped using hotmail because I'm not letting go of all my desktop files and pictures

When I turn all of the three options off, it disables the Save Changes button. It will let me turn on at least one to enable it again.

Why does half of the stuff In my pc are completely gone?!

One drive is the main reasons I now use Linux for most of what I do unfortunately not every program is usable in Linux. Microsoft is garbage

when I deactivated it, suddenly my document file disappeared, how can I prevent my document file from disappearing?

ohhh i already found the solution, so they created a shortcut for the local file in the cloud, so i just need to cut and paste

I have all unchecked but the unlink pc. But the screenshots are still going to one drive...very weird.

You use to be able to select what was and wasn't backed up in the documents folder. For example, Steam (gaming service), will put saved games in the documents folder. I do not need these backed up to the cloud and taking up spaced I cant see a way to select individual folders in the documents section. The way it is now is very silly and seems to be forcing people towards subscribing for more cloud storage through Microsoft. They have removed features that gave you more control.

I will find another solution to using OneDrive and backup manually.
