Chinese Tone Challenge! Can You Distinguish the Different Tones?

I can't difference between first and second tone

I just took this challenge as I take a crash course because I have a hard time pronouncing the 3rd time. This is my first attempt and I got 20 out of tones correct. I counted each tone per question as 1 point or 2 points per question. So I got 50% correct, or an F. My stats for my guesses break out like this:

Amount of Guesses Wrong:
1st tone: 4 out of 8 guesses wrong
2nd tone: 1 out of 7 guesses wrong
3rd tone: 5 out of 10 guesses wrong
4th tone: 8 out of 11 guesses wrong
Neutral tone: 1 out of 2 guesses wrong.

So from this, you can determine 2 main things. #1 I hear 3rd and 4th tones more than I should. #2 I can hear 2nd tone the clearest out of all of them.

If anyone finds this useful or interesting that is cool. You should know that I am tone deaf and also actually deaf in 1 ear. So take my results with a grain of salt. This mini-analysis is more for ME to use and come back to later, in a few months when I have more Mandarin classes under my belt.

I got 13/20, but only after I hear your repeated, slowed version of the word. I always confuse the 3rd and the 4th in normal speech! They're pretty different in slowed down one, though.

In two weeks I went from 9/20 to 14/20 🫡

I got 19/20. I failed at last one: third instead of second tone

20% accuracy as a brand new learner. I'm finding literally all tones difficult. But hey, maybe some time in the future I'll find the video again and update results :]

the first time i did it, my marks were 12/20. The second time i did it, i improved them to 15/20. Solwly i'll get better. I hope be able to master chinese tones 'cause grammar and vocabulary is too easy, however, i'm scared when it comes to be able to understand when tones are used in sentences and stuff. Anyway, your lessons are helping me too much so, thanks too much and i hope u do more videos like this.

Damn I feel so terrible, ive been learning mandarin for like 2 months and barely even got any answers right. And this is like one of the things that make me want to give up on this language, because it doesn’t natter how hard I try to make my pronunciation sound good just nothing gets better

I got 13/20 the 4th tone and neutral tone is the hardest for me

I got 9 out of 20, really happy to see how better I will get

I got like everything wrong lol

My mother tongue is Cantonese and I understand basic conversational Mandarin but if you ask me to categorize those words into the different tones, I would say I wouldn't fare any better than a beginner Mandarin language learner although I would have no problem understanding those words themselves.

I'm an absolute beginner. 1, 2 an 4 were easy though. Just low (3) and neutral (0) are confusing me.

Every time I think I start to know the tones, I realize I'm not... I somehow managed to get the first character in each sentence right every time, but too many of the second character, I failed.

The problem was never distinguishing between tones. The problem is always remembering what is the right tone to use

I scored 14/20. The most difficult thing is differentiating the second tone from the third tone.

got 12/20, which I consider surprisingly good for starting to look into chinese yesterday 😂 All of the ones i failed have in commom that i did ge the first word right but not the second. And my problem here seems to be mixing up 3rd and 4th tone.

Got 16 out of 20.. neutral tones are my number one problems. But im am still not able to understand chinese. How do i apply these tones?

I’ve been studying Chinese on and off for years and got 20/20 so I feel pretty proud of myself. Similar to others the 2nd and 3rd tone were the ones to almost catch me up.

gawd I only got half of it right, and I really had a huge problem discerning the 3rd tone from the 2nd tone.

I think i only had problems with about 3 of the 20. But I had to really think about it. In other words, it doesn’t come naturally yet. I think the hardest pair was 2 and 4 for me.

The hardest to distinguish for me are the 2nd and the 4th tone. I know that they are supposed to be opposite but I really can't tell if it's rising or falling and I put 2 4 and then it turns out to be the opposite. I got 12/20.

if I understood it correctly, the pronunciation of some tones change when followed by some other tones. Thus, if I have no idea of the character itself, I cannot possibly know whether what I hear is a special pronunciation of say a third tone character changing to a second tone, or a genuine second tone. Correct? Thanks.

20/20. Found it easy (especially with the slow repetition after each sentence), but as many people said, I had to pay close attention to 2nd tones in order not to confuse them with 3rds. Thanks Grace!

9/20. Same story here, I have troubles distinguishing 2nd and 3rd tone instantly.

Most problematic was the 24 pair for me as I always think 3 is the first one, so I should work on distinguishing 2 and 3 more

15/20, all 5 I missed involved 3rd tone. :/

16 out of 20. It seems I'm having trouble hearing the difference between tones after the first one. My mistakes were : 4. 1.3, instead of 1.0 ; 9. 1.0, instead of 1.3 ; 13. 1.3, instead of 1.2 and 19. 1.0, instead of 1.3 😅
