It’s tragic how she only got to freely express her true love for him right before her last sleep. Beautiful stuff Netflix

This video is so beautifully done. ❤ Their love story was so bittersweet. They had such a deep love for one another. Alex & Milly are such great actors, you could feel their love and, oh my goodness, feel his grief over losing her. Alexander should have won an award for his portrayal of Uhtred. And David Dawson should have for his portrayal of King Alfred. This series is leaps and bounds better than GOT. It should have gotten more attention & recognition. Criminally underrated. 😢

I'm back here because I can't stop thinking about this video. That moment Uthred is told she is dying... the journey of emotions on his face... disbelief, denial, utter heartbreak nd acceptance. If there is one scene I will remember I think that scene is it. It touched me so deeply.

This is honestly touching! From all the women Uthred has been with I am sure that Aethelflaed was the love of his life. Their love is based on a foundation of deep trust which was built over the time. Starting when she helped persuading her father to find Uthred when he was enslaved, continuing to the time around her wedding where it was very important for her that Uthred would attend the wedding. After she got mistreated by her husband it was pretty much clear for her that there is only one man she can really trust, who has always been loyal to her family. When she is being held captive she only asks Uthred to free her and Erik. In the battle after her rescue she helps Uthred by killing Sigfrid which leads to her being kind of shocked by herself. Uthred gives her confidence by nodding his head. The end of season 2 in my opinion is the point where she realizes that Uthred is not only the man she trusts the most but maybe even more than that.
In Season 3, when she asks for Uthreds help although she was told that he has fled north as a traitor and releasing him from his oath, is a decisive point. Uthred answers her call and at this point she knows he didnt do it because of an oath or because of honor, but just for her. Their talk in the stable where she kisses him is the moment she falls in love with him. When they return to Aegelesburg as outlaws, she prefers to stay next to him. You can also see how much Uthred means to her when she asks Edward to tell the king early enough about his promised 500 men so that Uthred could be informed before its too late.
Great parts of Season 4 speak for themselfs as the love between Uthred and Aethelflaed is openly shown. In the time when they need to find a new reign for Mercia, everything Uthred does is for his love to Aethelflaed which he also reveals to the king. Uthred even denies the throne of Mercia for his loved Aethelflaed which leads to her oath to remain chaste as long as she sits on the throne. Both Aethelflaed and Uthred are hit very hard by that oath but they accept it as necessary which in my opinion also shows their deep love and trust to each other. Uthreds farewell makes her cry then. When Aethelflaed arrives to the battle of Winchester, you can see her shock when she hears that Uthred is probably dead by now. When they later negotiate with Sygtryggr and Uthred learns that his daughter is part of the solution, his love to Aethelflaed is tested. Also in the end when Uthred recaptures the near past, he says that he gave up the woman he loved.
So the question for Season 5 is if their love is still there. And the question is answered pretty quickly in my opinion. When Aethelflaed visits Uthreds village, you can tell from their looks and behaving that they still love each other. The upcoming events then are obviously a horror for both of them. Aethelflaed cant tell him that she will die soon because she wants him to have a clear mind when fighting for his daughter so that he doesnt get killed, which is a sign for her love still being there. Uthred on the other hand kind of overreacts as he learns that she cant give him many men. Not knowing the true reason for that decision he just thinks that the woman he loves has changed in the past years. After that, in both of their behavior you can see that both are sad with what has been said but they have to move on.
The definitive point of truth comes when Finan tells Uthred that Aethleflaed will die soon and Uthred breaks down completely. Uthred then rushes to her place and the following walk is just beautiful. When they sit down and talk about what they had to give up to become who they are and if the other one regrets the way things have gone, you just see how much they still love each other after all the years of absence. You can see that although she and also Uhtred are proud of her work for Mercia, she feels bad how their love had to suffer in these years. Her dying in his arms after a last kiss is probably the most emotional scene in the whole series. They are made for each other, loved each other over all the years but because of political reasons they werent allowed to be together all the time.
Also Uthred stands up for her daughter Aelfwynn although he didnt really have a closer connection to her at all. In many of his actions you feel that he does it for Aethleflaed. When he later returns to his village, he tells his son that Aethelflead is still with him.
Another interesting aspect to all that love story is the change in behavior of Aethelflaeds mother Aelswith. Most of the time she has put political interests above everything but in the end she allows the love between Aelfwynn and Cynlaef. Probably she saw that even if her daughter Aethelflaed was a great queen and definitly the right choice for Mercia, her private life suffered a lot during these years. I think that the relationship between Uthred and Aethelflaed had a big impact on Aelswiths change in mind.
