humm how about wooden bowl in a container that has only like 10 to 20% oxygen(10 to 20% less than in normal atmosphere)? Or thermite can't even start burning under such conditions? Oh and like someone bellow suggested use a lathed bowl that's made of a single piece of wood. And you could also try different types of wood?

What if you pit thremite in a pipe? does it just burn down the pipe or shoot out?

That thermite burnt so quickly, most I've seen is a slower and hotter burn. Is it possible your formula is off? I think an excess of one of the ingredients can cause it to burn up too quickly.

How many layers of paper bowls do you need to hold thermite. Just stack like a foot tall stack of paper bowls, and let it rip. Should be a cheap and fun experiment :D

You really should try a lathe-turned wooden bowl. It's one solid piece of wood, so no glue joints to fail.
