There's a reason why so many repairers/restorers of antique radios advocate replacing all of the paper capacitors in radios of this vintage: Experience has shown that they have a high enough percentage probability of being bad that it is not worth the time and effort to mess around with them. The same can be said of selenium rectifiers, one of which, I note, remains installed in this machine. At the instant I write this we are 35 minutes into the 6th video on this radio, and we really haven't progressed much beyond where you were at the beginning of the first one. I think you need to pick up the pace.
ОтветитьGreat video I think I got all that lol.
ОтветитьYes, Agree with the previous posts. You commented changing all the caps just to change them is wasted time and money. It seems you are wasting more time changing one out, testing and finding more issues than it would be to take them all out and put fresh good working caps in. These caps would amount to under $20. I go by the Mr. Carlson's Lab motto, change all the old paper and electrolytics out in radios of this age. They are dead or going to be any moment. Why take a chance of cooking a tube or a transformer. If you pulled all these caps out at once it would be much quicker to re-cap the whole radio saving time and money. Only caps I leave in place on an old radio are ceramics or some sealed Mica caps because they rarely fail. Paper caps I've tested are always leaky in items this old. Much appreciation for your videos and efforts. My advice is meant with the utmost respect. I enjoy the videos even if I would do it different.
ОтветитьIf you are close enough to the transmitter it could be heard all over the dial
ОтветитьI think a total recap is in order. You 'll otherwise keep wearing the rest of the old ones out and take a few tubes out too unless that is done!
ОтветитьSilver mica disease? Hard to say with all the other old paper wax ones still in circuit.
ОтветитьI would change out all of the caps first thing...but that said, keep doing your own thing, I find your videos entertaining and learn more on trips to fantasy island than just watching yet another old radio recap video.
ОтветитьI think Glasslingers cat should run a man managemenr course for Peanut and Shadow
ОтветитьOMG change the wax capacitors!!!!!
ОтветитьLots of comments, including my own. All told... opinions aside - it is really interesting to watch Jim work in his shop. He's made a big effort to produce quality videos with quality sound - and he's succeeded spectacularly. Jim does AWESOME close ups. His vids are far better than most of could ever do. In addition, Jim is willing to share his personality, his life, and occasionally his views political, social, etc. To Jim, and all those who comment, I bid you a sincere '73 OM' from the great state of Michigan
ОтветитьRadio after radio after radio and comment after after comment you are advised by people to change the wax caps but you just ignore the advice time after time, I assume it is an intentional decision and a very odd one which results in you wasting a vast amount of time chasing your own tail hour after hour.................
ОтветитьI hope that it is not old capacitors breaking down, I wonder why the radio manufacturer didn't see fit to use 3x 12AX7 vacuum tubes as a double balanced mixer with builtin Local Oscillator.
