Anyone know where the clip of the little girl in the white dress is from?
ОтветитьIm a bit glad that the jodie spinoff got cancelled since kal penn was in on it and im still annoyed at his dumbass opinion about apu
ОтветитьI had some great learnings here. Thanks for the great commentary!
ОтветитьHonestly i think the thing you said about pre-teens/young teens not having ANY rep in media is so true but not just for black girls(coming from a 13yo black girl myself) but for ALL teens and pre teens. The reason you hear so many kids saying they wished they were teens back in the 2000 and 10s, is cuz you guys had SO MANY SHOWS FOR TEENS AND PRE-TEENS😭😭 like I've just been watching clips from shows like Daria, Tia and Tamera and more but like we have absolutely NO shows like that for our age to talk about. in between shows for pre teens and tees are a neglected genre:(
ОтветитьThe writers we’re in their BAG🙏🏽😃😤🙌🏾
…….I have to go and look up the writer who choose this story……is it a black person????
I recently started watching Daria and I would love more characters like Jodie in our media today. Representation matters so much and everyone deserves a chance to feel seen in the media they watch
Ответить😭😭😭💜
ОтветитьI see Daria video essay, i click. great video!
ОтветитьI never really grew up understanding racism, since I lived in a homogenic society, but even back then (a teen when Daria first came out) I understood how Jodie saw her "responsibility" to her community. I'm a lesbian, who grew up in a time when there was no mainstream LGBT+ represenration. I'm so happy that kids nowadays can actually see more people like them in fiction. It really matters, and I hope (though I have personal proof one way or the other) that it has also become better for BIPOC people. There's a long way to go, but it has definitely become better IMO.
Maybe I picked up on Jodie's need to be that relatable/good represenration, since I was conserned about a very similar issue at the same time. Yes, racism and homophobia are veru different things, but I believe there is enough similarities to where both sides can have a mutual understanding of challenges in representation.
ngl cried a little when she saw the little black girl in the crowd and immediately stood up
ОтветитьI do understand what Jodie did in that parade and I'm not black.
I like Daría and Jodie's interactions, their conversations were so open and honest. As a viewer you can see a different point of view from both and still agree with both parts.
Daria was such a good show.
I loved this video! Yes, re-watching the series really gave me an appreciation for Jodie and how developed she was. It was great that she wasn't just there to respond to Daria and actually had stories where she was the focus.
ОтветитьWith the case of Ariel a lot of black people hate it is because it’s a lazy race swap and to get more butts into seats. A lot of black people hate it is because it’s basically Hollywood saying that black people don’t deserve original characters and that they should be content with a lazy race swap. There are already African mermaids like Mami Wata. Disney has not had a good track record with non white characters. There are exceptions thankfully but they should be better.
ОтветитьMillennials watched this too at the time. The eldest millennials are over 40 now.
ОтветитьI feel that moment was very noticeable that she wanted to be a role model for the little girl. So she could see herself in those types of positions.
I would hope that anyone would notice and understand that significance of that scene no matter their race or background. But I have noticed by being on social media that a lot goes over ppls heads I wouldn’t think would so…
I agree that ppl default to black with mixed race ppl. But it’s like if the mixed race person is “white passing” I think they then think of them as white. It’s like how we look makes a difference how we’re treated. A lot of times for the worse but it’s true.
Like my best friend is lighter skinned but she is black. She isn’t mixed at least not any time recently. And ppl assume she’s bi racial.
So I think it usually has to do with what ppl think someone looks like how we categorize them and how we treat them. That stands for all races and again for better or worse.
loved the video- but why are going on about "overanalysing"? 20 minutes... you could call that a statement :)
a good one!
Yeah, there was a show idea for Daria and Jodie, to just a Jodie solo movie, but it was canceled sadly and the movie wasn't going forward
Ответитьi drove an icecream truck one summer after college and it was the best job i've ever had. pay wasn't great but driving around slow with no deadline and free icecream all day kicks ass.
ОтветитьFucking Tom, bro.
Ответитьthis is great
ОтветитьIn a difference series they might have a nemesis dynamic. As they are it's a perfect cynic/pragmatist dynamic.
ОтветитьGreat video. Thank you.
ОтветитьUnfortunately, last I read, Jodie has been scrubbed.
ОтветитьAmazing video!
ОтветитьI remember being like 12-13 and watching Jessie and realizing that black women on TV were so rarely ever allowed to have natural hairstyles; instead, only black girls, children, were seemingly allowed to.
It just felt like black hair was being treated as childish or unattractive. That the only way to be pretty or a real adult was to straighten your hair.
It’s a side note, but definitely another thing to really appreciate about Jodie and her design
I'm leaving an unimportant comment here bc i like the video. Awesome job!
ОтветитьI disagree with using The Little Mermaid as an example. Yes, you have some racially motivated hatred. But you also had fans like me that wanted to keep Ariel's image as true to her classic character as possible. There were much better examples of black women in Disney, like Penny from The Proud Family, and Okoye from Black Panther.
Ответить"...don't knoov vhj tha hell thej vuldn't haw J. Cjdnee J. cam bach asz Jodie bvvbvv."
ОтветитьAs an average (or below average) white man, I hear all these cries for representation, and I don't know what I can do to help. I'm not writing, directing, or casting anything. I already don't watch modern TV and movies, so I can't exactly boycott stuff for poor representation when I'm already boycotting everything for not being entertaining. What can we average white citizens do to improve your lives and entertainment? Do we even have a role in this, or do we need to just get out of your way and let y'all tell your own stories your way?
ОтветитьIncredible job,l! I’ve loved Daria for years now, and this exact scene has been one of the many defining reasons why I love it so much. Great job sharing your perspective and attachment to the character; can’t help but feel like you’re doing similar things for young black girls wanting to create content like so. ❤️
Ответитьawesome vid, thanks for sharing!
ОтветитьThis video. this. That's why I basically not a fan of new media rappresentations, not only of black peoples, but in general. My dad is half brown, not very attacked to the brown culture as he's a product of his time, born in the half of the '60 in Italy from a white italian mother. I sometimes wished I could say something without backlash or shit going on to others... so yeah, rappresentation is important not only for the peoples themself, but also for extrnal judgment and understand. I also give as a tv show with a black rappresentation "We are ladyparts", even if it's more brown Muslim orientated, there is- what I think -a solid black rappresentation. Ps. The show is UK, but I do suppose it work?
Also, I really wanna also say how much Jodie parents push their daughters, not of abuse but how very generational trauma orientated they probably are. You've been black all your life, you managed to be treated and respected as "white" people cause you're rich and you have a career and is big, you have respect in a city where black people are a minority. I really do think they also are an interesting analysis as MS. Li, who is technically a villain, but she's also Asian or Wasian at least, like Tiffany.
I always thought Jodie and Daria were very similar as people but that Jodie had parental expectations in addition to societal expectations from being a black woman.
Daria's parents and larger society are generally okay with letting her express her cynical demeanour even if they don't approve while for Jodie that option isn't as easy to take.
One of my favourite aspects of the finale was seeing Jodie finally get the confidence to prioritise her life and happiness above the expectations imposed on her.
I call myself Gen X im an older Millennial and I grew up watching this coming into HS . I have ALWAYS lived by Daria's goal in life bc I've been that person that didn't pick a major and when I did I didn't like it and I've experienced multiple type of career changes and I love it at 40 I haven't regretted anything compared to my classmates that wish they did this or that and looking to pivot in their career they've been in since HS college and not as well rounded
ОтветитьIn gen v Marie is supposed to be black but she’s casted by a biracial woman. Despite the actress looking more phenotypically black, she’s not. Which is a shame really that they couldn’t find a black actress to play a black character. Controversial but I can’t stand mixed actresses who do this. But then again, it depends on the casting director. For example like that movie straight outta Compton the casting call based on colourism.
ОтветитьThe storyline about Jody embracing her role as an inspiration for the little girl reminds me of Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek series. As the first season’s filming went on, Ms. Nichols was not getting the scenes and story involvement that Gene Roddenberry had promised with she got the role. She was in the verge of quitting, when she received a letter from Dr. Martin Luther King. He told her how much it meant to people of color to tune into the show every week and see a black character l, especially a woman, sitting center stage, right behind Captain Kirk. Ms. Nichols was inspired to continue in the role. This had even more positive effects than were hoped for at the time, as in the early 70s, Ms.Nichols was contacted by NASA to be a part of their efforts to encourage and recruit women and minorities into space program.
ОтветитьI love Jodie 💞
ОтветитьDamn, Daria has ended up being one of those classic cartoon blind spots for me. For no particular reason I just ended up never watching it growing up. Looks like I've really been missing out
