Congratulations on crossing the thousand subscriber threshold! It's richly deserved and only the beginning. As for the present video, I find it fascinating that so many beautiful, glamorous actresses come from such humble, even challenging beginnings. This should be an inspiration to all young, aspiring actors out there.
ОтветитьThere was a lot of artifice in Hollywood even during the it's Golden Era. But for a Hollywood star-actor, Vera Miles seemed almost entirely without artifice. Vera could appear plain and dowdy sans makeup, but she still was highly watchable because her top characterizations transcended any glamour quotient that may not have been apparent. She was simple but lovely in Psycho and The Wrong Man, both Alfred Hitchcock vehicles; Her acting again came to the fore in '23 paces to Baker Street' plus The Searchers and The man who shot Liberty Valance. Vera was glamorized to the nines with a top role in the glitzy Ross Hunter production of 'Back Street' which starred Susan Hayward and John Gavin; Vera played the disillusioned tipsy wife to the hilt. She was in scores of intriguing TV dramas. With or without makeup, Vera Miles had very neat features; makeup only heightened her porcelain beauty. From what I cab recall, she was once married to Northwest Passage star, Keith Larsen and to Gordon Scott who played Tarzan in the 50's/60's.
ОтветитьVera Miles was a excellent, great and underated actress. She co-stared with Joan Crawford in 1955's "Autumn Leaves". Joan was wondering why she didn't get more roles. Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock black listed her like he did Tippi Hedren when she refused his constant sexual advances. Everything that she ever played in, her acting was always outstanding and unforgettable. She always put her family first.
ОтветитьVera Miles has always been in my Hollywood stratosphere of stars. Thank you so much for this video!
ОтветитьGuess what ? Vera and I share the same birthday !! August 23rd. I've always admired her beauty, charm, and grace. She's a very private person (as you pointed out) and didn't do any of the autograph shows I attended. She did, however, very graciously sign autographs by mail for anyone who wanted them - free of charge except for the postage ! I, of course, have one ! I would have loved to see her at the TCM festival, but she's kind of like the late Doris Day - very private. BTW, you say the character in "For Men Only" who was asked to kill the dog was "hounded to death" ? One of your better puns, Nan !! Guess the same could be said of Jackie Cooper and his dog !!
Happy Birthday Vera !! Maybe we can celebrate together next time ??!! 🎂🥰🤩😍
Vera made it look so easy in her many TV and movies. Also , for me , she was such a simple plain beauty with sex appel.
ОтветитьLove that you gave a tribute to this strong woman. I wonder if she kept in touch with her siblings? First...Live, love, love the Spirit is Willing! It's such a fun film which seemed to be a great genre from the 60s..the family on a trip. I love her in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance and that film always makes me cry. I love Jimmy, but, in this film, she should have chosen John Wayne. Oops...spoiler alert. I love Columbo and that wig of hers is over the top. I love the Love Boat who had a who's who of great older stars( Fantasy Island was similar). I still need to see the episode with Greer Garson. I hated Psycho 2 and the others. I wonder who her favourite co-star was, not the ones she married :)) another great podcast.
You know who needs some lovings...the stuntman. Yakima Canutt, Harvey Perry, Busyer Keaton and so many more. I hope you both have a beautiful day and happy 50th episode. I have a lot to catch up on.
Sublime actress, one of our home state's great contributions. Wonderful episode, Happy Anniversary, Steve and Nan, more, please, thank you. ❤❤🎉❤❤
Ответитьthat comment about Kim Novak was uncalled or. She was brilliant in Vertigo and its a shame that the host had to throw in that little dig.
ОтветитьGreat episode!!!!
ОтветитьI wondered what happened, why would a14 year old want to emancipated herself from her family.
ОтветитьI first saw the Spirit is Willing on TV as a tweenager. I never forgot it and finally purchased a bootlegged DVD copy later in life. I still have it and watch it every now and again. This was also my introduction to Barry Gordon.
I love the still of the pageant winners wearing the “Barbie” swim suit ten years before Barbie wore it.😊
A really great episode on such a fascinating lady! Happy birthday to her and Happy Anniversary to the podcast and you all. Congrats on hitting one thousand subscribers as well. I'm certain that number will continue to rise as people discover this wonderful podcast ❤
ОтветитьVera Miles has long been one of my favorites. I saw "Psycho II" in the theater and it's not bad, at least compared to rest of the sequels.
Miles lost the 1948 Miss America pageant to Bebe Shopp, Miss Minnesota. Lois Nettleton, another favorite of mine, was another finalist. Bebe Shopp is still with us at the age of 94.
